The last thing I heard about the Norplant(implant underneath the skin of your upper arm) was that they were no longer using it. Those who already had the implants could continue, but that they were slowly phasing it out. They were supposed to bring out a safer implant eventually, but I still haven't heard anything about it. I think it lasts for up to 5 years, but they can recharge the rods or something(not quite sure how that works).

If you are looking to have a child in 5 years time why don't you look into the Mirena IUD. It lasts for 5 years and (I'm not sure of this)I think it's safe to use if you are breastfeeding. This is a safe method of "long term" birth control without sterilization. There are always side effects like any other birth control option, but this might work better for you and I know they still use this.

Congratulations on your baby girl!

You might consider depo-provera as an alternative.

I asked my doctor about the implant, and her concern was that it is difficult to remove, because the tissues around it grow into it. I believe they were intended to last 7 or 8 years.

Depo-provera is a shot that you get once every three months. They say it can take 6 months to a year for the effects of it to truly wear off, so that you can get pregnant again.
