You need to define weird. Is he biting, growling, peeing in the corner, hiding?? Be more specific if you could.

How old, and what breed? Are you male or female? I do foster dog care and I currently have a foster who was abandoned and abused. I had her for about 4 days before she would let me touch her. I started by sitting on the stairs at about her level, and she finally let me scratch the side of her face. She learned that I was the source of food and safety. Now, she is a very affectionate dog with me, but still a bit wary of others, particularly men. Keywords are patience and gentleness. If it really is too much, check out a trainer, either obedience class or someone who works with problem behavior like "the dog whisperer".

First of all I love that you chose a abused dog, & I know you have to be a great person. I adopted, or I should say 2 of my dogs adopted me, both were very abused. Just raising our voice in the home made both dogs pee, if one of us made a move, too fast, or we raised our hand, not torward the dogs but say to reach for something they jumped into a corner, or started to pee, ears way back & very scared. This will pass, but it won't happen over night.
You may know what abuse your dog had to go through, he might be scared of men, boots, or just the sound of keys, all this is connected to his former life. He must first learn how to trust you & only with you giving him 100% love he'll eventually will learn not all humans are assholes to animals!! Just don't give up on him, he'll reward you with uncontested love & faithfulness for the rest of his life. Spend lots of time with him talking softly, pet him & you are in for the ride of you life, 'cause a dogs love cannot be imitated, he will love you no matter what & that alone is worth not giving up on him. As I said give him time so he can see you are not like the former owner, or owners had been to him.

many dogs are like this. first thing you do is temporarily get rid of some other pets you might have. board them at a kennel. have a friend take them for a while. you might need to take a few days off of work or school or whatever. turn off all things that make a lot of noise. the more noise there is the more he will be frightened. get some treats. just small treats. not like a rawhide or a beggin strip. just some little tiny treats. get down to his level. sit on the ground if you have to. show him the treats. if he seems interested in them, just lightly toss him one. not too far, but not too close either. if he comes to eat it toss another one. this time a little closer to you. the aim of this is to get him to eat out of your hand. and show him your not such a bad guy. find a toy that you think he might like. maybe if you can get close enough to get a collar and leash on him take him for a walk. he just needs some time to come out of his shell. when i got my puppy he cowered under my bed for 3 days. we had to leave the house to get him to eat. just make sure to keep it quiet. dont bring back your other pets you might have until he will willingly come to you when you call him or just anytime.

its alllllll about trust...he just needs some time to understand you arent gonna do the same thing to him as his previous owners..and since none of us know exactly what he's doing..I'd say he's just adjusting..Go slow with him,. but be sure and give him lots of praise and love and he'll get more comfortable..you can also call your local humane society and they usually do classes to show you how to bond and train an abused animal like that. Dont give up on him now,.

considering that the pet has been abused it will probably take him a while to see that you are not going to hurt him or her. the best thing to do is show it alot of love and care and he or she will come around in time. just don't give up on him he is just looking for someone to love him and someone who will lve him back the same
