I am 15yrs old and am a big fan of Marilyn Monroe. I have decided to get a tattoo in memory of her when i am old enough. I have told my mum about this and shes 100% fine with it and thinks its lovely, cos she knows how much i like Marilyn and that i wont regret it. The thing is, as i live in the UK, i would love to know what the rules are for tattoo's. I know that you have got to be 18 to get one, but ive also heard you can get one aged 16 with parental permission. Is this true?
Thanks to all that reply

Dont worry, im very sensible for my age. And i wont be getting pregnant within 4 months of getting the tattoo. Im not like that at all. When i say a tattoo in memory of Marilyn Monroe, i dont mean a massive one that will cover all my back! I mean something like her name in fancy writing, or a lipstick mark etc. And i definately wont regret it, because Marilyn is my idol and i adore her!

You have an old head on young shoulders and i applaud you for that. Why don't you wait for 3 years until it is legal for you to do so and may be, just may be you will change your mind.
Why is the rush?

I understand exactly how you feel. Marilyn Monroe was a beautiful woman surrounded in mystery and scandal. I am a personal fan, but not enough so to get something like that tatted. Not to say you aren't, after all, I know people with Aerosmith and Stones tats that love them to this day.
As for age, in my state, you can be 16 with parental consent and the required identification and such. But because you live in a totally separate country, I can't give a real answer other than this: Go with your mother to a local parlor and discuss it with an artist. They know the laws and what you would need. Just be sure that no matter what, you get it done in a parlor because home tats and hole in the wall places are some of the leading causes of Hepatitis, HIV, and a whole other list of blood borne diseases.
As far as the age, man I'm 17. I've had all my tats and piercings planned out for the last 4 years! Screw the age, but I would suggest not getting a tat unless you've though it over thoroughly for at least 6 months.
Hope I've helped!

My cousin was 15 or 16 when she got her tattoo and she was able to do so with her mother's permission and presence. The tattoo shop was clean and professional and her tattoo came out very nice. So, if the tattoo you want is something you're seriously ready for and absolutely KNOW that you will never regret, then I say you should do it. If you have any hesitations whatsoever, wait until you are 18. Of course, I live in America and not the UK so maybe my advice is completely irrelevant to you, because maybe you must be 18 to get a tattoo there. If all else fails, ask around. Just make sure you find a reputable place that others can recommend.
P.S. DO NOT get a tramp stamp

Ok it may be different in the UK, but here in the US, if you live in a state where tattoo parlors are legal, then you can get a tattoo under the age of 18 with parental consent. Dont listen to everyone else. If you want a tattoo then get a tattoo. Of course make sure its something you wont regret and get it somewhere it cant be seen but other than that go ahead.

Yes they do :) I'm 14 and got my first tattoo last week. The artists will do it as long as you have your parent(s) go in with you and sign papers. All you have to do is find a CLEAN and TRUSTED tattoo studio and talk to them. Mind you most tattoo artist who work on younger people don't feel comfortatble tattooing where is is very visible. example : A 16 wants a scorpian on his arm (they wouldn't do that). Just think it over because tattoos are for life. I really hoped this helped and that you'll be happy about your tattoo. ps. It doesn't hurt as much as everyone says. Depends on your tolerance and where you get it. I got mine above my ankle and it only felt like a cat scratching me and burning. :)

I had my first tattoo when I was 40 Id wanted one for years and years eventually my daughter booked the appointment and paid for it for my birthday surprise I was ecstatic and immediately booked an appointment for another!! My mum said to me but what about when you get older I said mum I AM older!!! lol I love my tattoos...just the 2 both in places where they can be covered up if need be or on display for all to see which I love. I do however think that you are a little young, my brother had one done age 18 and regretted it as it was dated and not a very good one...a tiger on his arm so make sure if you have one its done by a reputeable artist and is tasteful

The rule I use with tatoos is that they have to have some deeper meaning or purpose. They cannot just simply be permanent pieces of pop art on your skin. I agree that 16 may be to young. That is something you and your mother have to decide. If you are still willing to go with it then go for it. I know in the states you can be 16 with parental permission. If you can't go to a shop and get it done, then find an apprentice. Someone who is learning how and let them do it. Obviouisly don't make it too complicated or intricate, but a simple name or lettering should be something they should be able to handle.

i was only young when i got my first tattoo , i regret having it now as i have changed as a person as i have gt older , your feeling towards her might changed but without surgery your tattoo can not . think seriously about it before you have it done or maybe wait till you are a little older . I'm not sure about the parental permission it might depend on where you go to have it done , chose wisely and shop around ask other people in your area where is the best place to go and make sure they follow all the hygiene rules it better to be safe

I think most places have an 18 policy, but you don't want to go somewhere dodgyjust because the'll let you get one early. I won't preach that you are too young, I got one at 19 (and don't regret it)but that said I know a girl who loved the yellow smiley face so much that she got a large one tattooed on her ankle, needless to say she's 22 and regrets it now, so really think about it before you get one.

All places are eighteen and over. I have several tattoo's and recommend that you do wait till your eighteen, and think really hard about what you are having done and where on your body you want it. Also recommend that you find a really good tattoo parlour, that will sit down and discuss with you about the type of tattoo you would like. Even if you love your tattoo if you put it in the wrong place you could grow to hate it. So think about it really hard, i am sure it will look great when you eventually have it done.
