All depends on why they would say that . If it was something you have done and it was really a bad thing, then they are just telling you that if you continue you, will burn in hell. Christians only say that when someone has done something really bad, like not obeying the Commandments. Sometimes it is just a joke. All depends on the conversation and the action. They don't say it , just to be mean. They say is as a warning. Christians are not mean.

Neither. They're simply stating a fact from their perspective.

Of course, you may see that as one of those two, just as others may see your question as judgmental or just mean for offering only those two very negative options.

And finally, to "smiley.george" at the very top of this list of answers, it is amazing how many non-Christians selectively quote the Bible to fit their own needs or agendas at the moment as you've done.

Yes, Jesus did say something to the effect of "let him without sin cast the first stone." However, beyond the obvious fact that words are not stones, he also told the woman in that situation to "go and SIN no more." In other words, he JUDGED her to be a sinner. And, elsewhere in the Bible, God made it very clear what ultimately happens to sinners - they burn in hell.

So, as you can see, this particular reference doesn't support your viewpoints at all, nor the viewpoints of the person originally asking the question above.

Look at their motives for saying it.
Usually they seem to be judgmental although sometimes it seems just plain mean.
It’s not for any of us to say who is going to Heaven and who is going to Hell. I am very certain that none of us will be allowed to make that call.
We Christians should be more concerned about how we live our own lives and keeping our own homes in order.
Everything else will be up to the perfect wisdom of God.

I don't care what anybody here says, Christians can be very mean...some of the meanest people I have ever met. As a matter of fact, my family tells me that I'm going to burn in hell all the time because I abandoned my faith. Now that I'm having a baby, they say I'm going to burn in hell if I raise my child to be "ignorant" (non-Christian). I consider that ignorant! and I don't believe in hell...in one ear and out the other...

I think both, depending on how it was said. The Bible teaches on Hell, but it is more a warning. Matthew 5:29 "...It is better to lose a part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell." Not as a condemnation.

Both. Strange breed those christians! They try to be good people and then tell you to spend all of eternity burning in hell! Not nice!
One good thing about hell - the lack of christians there!

I think when Christians tell people they are going to burn in hell are they being judgmental and unhelpful to the person. Very distasteful.

They are being "judgmental" or just "mean"!
In so doing they are only condemning the person. However, “These are the things that the Son of God says, . . . ‘I am he who searches the inmost thoughts and hearts, and I will give to you individually according to your deeds.’” (Rev. 2:18, 23) Not we as imperfect humans. Jesus himself said: “Stop judging, that you may not be judged; for with what judgment you are judging, you will be judged.” (Matt. 7:1, 2)

Futhermore, the inspired scriptures makes no mention of "hellfire" nor its pugatory, or ones burning for eternity. Hence, they should ask themselves, Is eternal torment of the wicked compatible with God’s personality?
Notice Jeremiah 7:31: “They [apostate Judeans] have built the high places of Topheth, which is in the valley of the son of Hinnom, in order to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire, a thing that I had not commanded and that had not come up into my heart.” (If it never came into God’s heart, surely he does not have and use such a thing on a larger scale.)

To illustration: What would you think of a parent who held his child’s hand over a fire to punish the child for wrongdoing? “God is love.” (1 John 4:8) Would he do what no right-minded human parent would do? Certainly not!

They are being judgemental and mean at the same time. Sometimes, people try to justify themselves by judgeing and hurting others. They may be doing something that they know or believe is wrong. They're just trying to make themselves feel better.

They're talking out of their own hearts, as there is no eternal punishment in a fiery hell. These people paint God as cruel and unjust. The Bible warns; Consequently let him that thinks he is standing beware that he does not fall. 1 Corinthians 10:12
