If a woman has an abortion, one of the first things you will hear is "Thou shalt not kill." But doesn't also say in the Bible "Judge not, lest you be judged." How can some people pick certain things out of the Bible that is befitting to them, but not other things?*

*This is just a question I have. I just want to know people's viewpoints. If at all possible (and I would hope it is), please be respectful with your answers.

god, this is one of the biggest misunderstandings...

it is *NOT* "thou shalt not kill" its "thou shalt not MURDER" murder and killing is quite different.

people act that way because they can, and they don't think about it.

First off all religions do this not just the Catholics. They make all kinds of excuses why some things do not apply anymore. However the truth is even crazier then you might think.

Churches preach the same message over and over again, they skip most of there holy books to preach theses same scriptures. The religious people are extremely lazy so they only read a small part of thier Holy books, ect. ect. Now for the stangest thing about it. Most strong Athiests have red more of the Holy books then the strong religious.

See this is a major problem. I mean go to any church for a year and see how many times certain scriptures come up and how most of the scriptures don't come up once. Find a remote part of a holy book a debate a highly religious person about it; see how much they don't know about there own religion.

I am all religions and will never judge you on any of your actions; I may try to help you or give you advice; but I will never judge. In other words I have an open ear and an open mind.

It is not a Christians lot to Judge others as you have pointed out. Jesus is our Judge and we will be judged according to His word and according to the measure of judgement that we despense in His name. So if we critisize someone for something and then go and do the same thing ourselves, as Christians we can expect to be judged accordingly.

By the same token if we (as Christians) can point out the error of someones ways without being judgemental this is a good thing provided that we do so for the right reasons. I also believe it's impolite to be overly critical in public, and this is a very public forum but God's truth must always come first.

The last word in these matters should always be the uncompromising word of God and as a Christian I believe that the Bible is exactly that, word for word. God expects us however to exercise wisdom and good judgement when speaking out.

The human life is God's to give and God's to take away. If we snuff out a life that He has ordained to be, for what ever reason then we must according to His word consider it nothing short of murder for which we need as all sinners do, the forgiveness of God through Jesus.

There is also a scriptural precedence validating the life of a fetus although often misapplied to mean the opposite:

Exo 21:22-23
If men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman's husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. And if any mischief follow, then thou shalt give life for life, .... (KJV)

These verses describe a situation where a pregnant woman might get embroiled in or try to break up a fight between men. A pregnant woman in those days was able to do so very easily because of this very law.

If as a result of the "strife" a woman is struck and her baby departs from her but neither the woman nor the child is injured, then the nature of the punishment for this serious offense is at the discretion of the husband / judges. But if either the woman’s or the child's life is lost (i.e. that mischief follows) then the punishment is automatically as it would be for murder, a life for a life or if only injury of either is incured, then eye for an eye etc.

Clearly then the verse quoted gives the unborn child all of the rights accorded to any other person. So conferring "person" status upon a fetus.

Out of more than 600 laws of Moses, none comments on abortion. One Mosaic law about
miscarriage specifically contradicts the claim that the bible is antiabortion, clearly
stating that miscarriage does not involve the death of a human being. If a woman has a
miscarriage as the result of a fight, the man who caused it should be fined.
If the woman dies, however, the culprit must be killed:

"If men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her,
and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished according as the woman's husband
will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine.

"And if any mischief follow, then thou shalt give life for life, Eye for eye, tooth for
tooth . . ."--Ex. 21:22-25

The bible orders the death penalty for murder of a human being, but not for the expulsion
of a fetus.

Well, I think the thing is not to do things you would be judged harshly for but, besides that the Bible says we can judge all things being that we are members of the Body of Christ and we will judge all things at the end of time.

Imagine what society would be like if we weren't allowed to judge murder! Many people take that verse out of context and therefore say that Christians can't condemn sin because it's "judging". Perhaps the best way to think about it is that we are trying to put up a road block to warn you that you are about to do something that GOD in HIS Word has judged as sinful and wrong, and to protect you from the harmful consequences of your actions. Just something to think about. Blessings to you.

If you are doing something that goes against the word of God, christians will defend it. Someone has to speak up for the things they believe in., good or bad. Judging (Matthew 7:1) is often misquoted by those who are not open-minded to God's Word. A careful examination of the context of the Scriptures shows that judging (discerning) is demanded. In order to take the speck out of thy brother's eye, we have to discern that he has a speck in his eye. Since we will all be judged by God's Word, how can we go wrong by judging righteous judgment according to His Word?

:) That is actually a very nice question. In my experience, most people-including me I'm sure-take what is relevant at that time and forget the rest. What I learned from Christianity is that we should follow the commandments but NOT judge others because the day comes when God will do so. So you are correct in feeling that it's a contradiction.

abortion is wrong and when it occurs it is a sin and it is murder, that can be proven medically. it is wrong to judge people for their action,we all make mistakes and people who have abortions can be forgiven the same way a serial killer can be forgiven provided they change there ways and seek god. however i see no problem with people protesting and showing scripture to support why they are against it,this can be done without judging. hope this helps, have a good day.

well the bible requires courts and judges for a reason.

a Judge is not only allowed but required to judge a person who is accused guilty of a crime.

the phrase Judge not, lest you be judged is basicly to say give the person all the benifit of doubt you can.

Agreed. But the consequences of abortion are a lot bigger than the consequences of judging. Everyone judges at one time or another. Not everyone kills someone.
