Mystics teach us that God is encountered only in the inner silence, but we seem to be very good at filling silent moments with lots of other "stuff". Interested how you feel about this? I know some folks who cannot stand for things to be quiet; they even sleep with a tv at full volume. I know others, like me, who feel completely overwhelmed when there is just too much varying noise and activity. If I cannot encounter silence to recharge, my brain goes into overload.

I couldn't agree with you more! I truly value peace and quiet and if I don't get some of it every day I feel frazzled and unable to cope. I feel my need is dependent on how much I am dealing with at any particular time. Sometimes when things are going smoothly I can get by on less , and when things are nightmarish (like now), I require a whole lot more.

I definitely value silence. There are times when nothing's better than turning off all the distractions--radio, TV, all of it--and sitting down to some beautiful quietude. I can easily encounter silence in my daily life, but I make a conscious decision to do so. I love silence, so I have no problem whatsoever unplugging the TV and enjoying my peace and quiet.

I enjoy the peacefulness of a quiet morning listening to the birds and the wind in the leaves. I wouldn't call it "silence", because there is always something going on, even in "the middle of nowhere".

I do still have issues when I try to meditate, though, in shutting up my own inner dialogue, which wants to run a color commentary or play-by-play of what's going on in my head instead of just sitting back and watching.

Many traditions value silence. I, too, know people who can't seem to stand being alone or having silence. They can't be in a car by themselves, and, if they are, they're on the cell phone. I know others who always have music playing, especially when they're alone. I like music, but I need silence and spans of solitude to retain my sanity.

I like my tunes. My mother loaned me her car and the radio is broken. I hate it. I need to be soothed by music.
