I would really love to get a parrot or a couple of parrots but I can't find anyone in Kentucky who raises them.

I would like to have a senegal or monk parrot I have read up on them, so I know how long they live and have read magazines and books on how to take care of them, Plus I own Cockatiels. But I have always wanted a Senegal or Monk Parrot. Thanks for all of your answers so far. You have given me some great places to look and places to read more about them.

First off you can look up on petfinder.com, birdsnways.com, and several other sites for "parrots". However you asking for a "parrot" is very vague. I mean this because lovebirds are parrots, African Greys are parrots, Macaws are parrots, Parrotlets, and cockatiels are parrots, and the list goes on and on. I urge you before you get a parrot to analyze your life and the time you have to devote to a pet, just as you would getting a dog or a cat. Birds aren't about just caging them up throwing in some seed and keeping them for posterity. They have to be played with everyday (just like walking a dog). They have to be let out to roam around just like a cat would, of course under your supervision, and they are just like kids in that you have to give them FRESH fruits and veggies everyday. Seeds are extremely fattening for birds, and in medium sized birds like an African Grey, they should only be allowed about 2 TABLESPOONS of seed a day, the rest should be fresh! Research the birds you are interested in, and make a list of what type of situation you have available for them, do you have room for a 4'X5' cage for a cockatoo, or just enough room for a small 2'X2' cage for a lovebird? Do you live in an apartment where a screaming bird can get you evicted? Do you plan on keeping it its entire lifespan, or just rehoming them. Birds aren't like dogs to where they form an attachment to everyone that loves on them. Birds (depending on the breed) can be one person birds, and can be devestated when rehomed several times in their lives, you would hate it too! And depending on the bird, they can outlive you, my lovebirds can live up to 20 years, and my conure could live up to around 30 years. And those are smaller species of birds, Macaws can live up to 65 years! So before you go and get a "parrot" look into what kind you want. If you've never owned a bird, a Macaw is not up your alley. I started small with 2 lovebirds, and then bought a Sun Conure, and if my apartment was bigger I would probly get another bird or 2, but thats not likely! Anyhow I hope you heed some of my advice at least, or try to take it into consideration! Good luck!

hopefully you have weighed all options. parrots are very loud and needy. there are some great website for rescues. these are not all abused birds. some of them just outlived there owners. parrots can live up to 60years. at least look at these sites to help make you decision, on breed, size etc....good luck they can be a neat pet, also a pain in the butt. my favorite site is the gaberialfoundation.com someone is always there to answer questions and can refer you to people in your area.
