It is a figure of speech...

I sort of see the purple duck idea as the perfect example.
Since I don't believe that a purple duck farted the universe, and I don't believe any purple duck has any power to send me to hell, for me to get offended by such a statement would be saying something about MY lack of intelligence.....

(Just in case some in your audience were too slow to get that, I would be pretty stupid to get insulted because someone insisted that a purple duck who farted the universe is going to send me to a meat grinder...since I dosn't believe in the purple duck OR the meat grinder.
What a waste of time!)
DUH!!

Because a lot of people think its a messed up idea to send someone to hell for their beliefs. I would never tell someone they are going to hell because life is supposed to be about living and learning not about worrying whats going to happen to you after you die and if you do what is the point of living.

I get "bent out of shape" at the fact that anyone would think they have the right to judge. Ignorance and bigotry get me bent out of shape frequently.

Mabye because you are insulting them. Just because they don't believe in hell doesn't take away the fact that you are intending to say something bad about them.

It is rude. Telling someone to burn in hell is like telling them to F off. It is called tact.

If I told a Christian that they were going in the meat grinder every time they questioned my insistence that a purple duck farted the Universe, eventually they would get sick of it.

You aren't made of rubber bands, but if I told you to get bent, you might take offence.

Because you insulted their intelligence by making the preposterous claim that "hell' actually exists.
