The older one is a female and the little kitten is a male. Should my older cat know better than not to do that?

Try a squirt gun. Or a spray bottle of water set to squirt a stream. The older one will NOT like that and if you monitor them for a while, squirting the older one when it start acting aggressive towards the little one, he will eventually learn to stop bothering the other cat.

I know some people will tell you that the squirt bottle idea is not nice and is still cruel, but you are the master of these two cats, and you have to teach them without hurting them.

I wouldn't like to get squirted, and if someone was randomly watering me, I might think them cruel. But then, I am not the one beating up on the kitten. The older cat may not understand why he is getting squirted, because he doesn't know that he is not supposed to do attack the little one. This is natural behavior for a cat. So is peeing on any furniture in his "territory," but you have to stop them from doing that to.

The cat may not really understand why, but he will learn to stop doing that if he does not want to get wet.

If the older cat is winning most of these fights, keep a water bottle on hand to squirt them with. If that doesn't stop them, dump a glass of water on the older cat. If the kitten is winning, leave them alone. Eventually the older cat will get tired of getting beat up and stop attacking.

I used a towel and rubbed it all over the mean alpha cat and then rubbed it onto the kitten. Then vice versa and kept the towel at the food dish. They got used to each other scent really quickly. It also helps to have them spaided as well. Other than that I really cant think of anything else. They really have to get used to each other on their own over time.

Another advice it to NEVER grab a cat when they are fighting, or near fighting...you'll get scratched or even worse, you'll get bitten.

Get a squirt gun and use it on the older cat a couple of times usually that works and doesn't hurt the cat.

You really should not attempt to break up a cat fight, because you could get seriously mangled. I have two cats that have the same issues, these animals have figured how to deal since they evolved...they will figure it out, whether one cat ends up being submissive or one the king of the jungle. As long as one is not being deprived of his food, he should turn out ok.

i'm so sorry on your loss Its unusual, how a sprint fluff of fur can wrap around your coronary heart, and whilst they circulate away us they take a peice human beings with them. a pal of mine wrote this whilst she had to place her cat down and it has helped me comprehend that this is out of love. BeBe’s on a course with woods on the two side. the course splits and there's a style of wooded island in between. She’s shifting in the direction of the appropriate-hand course, looking her very own way forward, unavoidably in the direction of her dying—represented by making use of a meadow that opens up the place the two paths rejoin. The left-hand course is the place I take can charge and deliver her down it. the two course is comfortable along with her, on account that they the two bring about a similar place…perhaps that meadow the place the animals look ahead to you to connect them formerly crossing the Rainbow Bridge. .....and that i'm imaging us on that course together formerly it divides. If she went down the appropriate-hand course, she'd crawl, with each and every of the discomforts of the present. yet as quickly as I set her on the left-hand course, all of her potential would be restored and he or she'll run like the wind out into that eye-catching meadow. safeguard your self and God Bless

i don't know you but i really don't want you to get hurt while trying to break up a cat fight. you really don't specify if this is an old cat and a new member of the house or anything but i think you should try to keep them apart from each other for a while or only until they get used to each other. but whatever it is good luck and please be careful.

New pets? New pets are supposed to be locked up in another room, so other pet can come along and get to know its smell from under the door. Or being caged.

Ask a Vet on bringing in a new pet. Same species.

Squirtgun filled with water and a few drops of vinegar or lemon juice, and a pop can with 15 pennies in it(tape the top closed). When they fight, squirt and toss the can at them(but don't hit them with it).The water and noise will startle them and break up the fight.
