we have a bill of sale from his lover, and as far as we know there is no other family and we have had the car sitting in the barn for three years. Now we want to put a title to it and sale it to whom ever wants to buy it but I don't know how to go about getting a title for this car seeing as the owner is dead.

Upon death, there either had to be an executer of his estate, or he had no will to probate, and the state legally owns everything he had. Obviously you own a computer, so if you know his name, look up his death certificate in your state's vital statistics database, you'll need that. Then look up the title on the car by the VIN number in your state's Department of Motor Vehicles info database. Order copies of both documents, take those, and the Bill of Sale that you have to the DMV, and you should be able to get a title issued in your name.

This is different in each state in the United States, and even more different outside the USA. Go to your local motor vehicle department and explain the situation. You will have to prove in some manner that you were entitled to inherit the car (a will or court document, the decendant's death certificate, and whatever other information confirms that he has no family to claim the car) and then the department will issue title.

After you (or the estate) receives title, it can be sold as any other normal car.

The executor of his estate will have to secure the title for you and then sign it over to you.

Alternatively you might be able to apply for an abandoned title IF the vehicle is on your property. Each state has their own specific procedures but it usually takes a few months to run through the process.

Don't bother with applying for a "lost" title. You're not the legal owner and they won't give it to you.

The executor of the estate needs an origional death certificate to sign off of the title for the deceased.
The title then needs re-assigned to you before you can legally sell it.

Go to your county clerks office and file for a lost title. If you can bring a copy of death certificate and bill of sale they can help you.

Apply to the secretary of state for a new title. Or, go to the DMV and tell them and they will steer you where you need to go. It's not that comlicated. You will probably need a death certificate.
