This humble and well-worn hymnal was printed in 1640 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, by Stephen Daye, first printer of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. It is the very first book printed in what is now the United States.

Known as The Bay Psalm Book, but really titled The Whole Booke of Psalmes Faithfully Translated into English Metre, it represents what was most sacred to the Puritans--a faithful translation of God's Word, to be sung in worship by the entire congregation. Other Protestant denominations relied on selected paraphrases of the Scripture, but the Puritans believed this could compromise their salvation. The same faith that compelled them to leave England and strike out for the New World prompted them to commit this text to print before all others.

I am not positive but I think that the you will find that the 1st text book came over a 100 years before the American revolution, The north American Continent was inhabited by the English,French and Spanish, for over 200 years before the revolution. After the revolution the 1st published book would most likely have been printed by Ben Franklin or Thomas Jefferson or a Canadian press is very possible however they were loyalist to the throne of England. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

The American Revolution was started by Paul Revere when he exclaimed "Give me liberty, or give me death" at the Boston Tea Party. After he and Robert E. Lee took up arms against the French goverment, the Queen responded by saying "let them eat cake." On July 4th, they rang the Liberty Bell so hard that it cracked and was heard in England, where King George decided that red coats would make a scarier army uniform. The turning point of the revolutionary war was Ben Franklin's invention of the machine or "gatling" gun (named for the GAT GAT GAT sound that it made). Against the Americans' (named after their new king Amerigo Vespucci) superior firepower, the English did not stand a chance. They retreated by way of the shipping route now known as the English Channel.
