its a progressive disease that affects nerve cells in parts of the brain. effecting the memory, learning, language, and reasoning centers.
and over time as it progresses it can have an effect on the body as a whole.

I think what happens is that the brain forgets to send out signals to vital body parts. For instance, it doesn't tell the heart to pump.
