I think that my question is not at all similar to other questions about Bill Gates.
I know nothing about him, and I shall never know. Even if Bill Gates wrote to me to tell who he is, still I cannot claim that I know him.
I am informed that if I wanted to know about Bill Gates, I should put his famous name on any search engine box, I would get books, images, videos...telling me all aspects of his life. If I do so, I will waste many precious hours of my life. Do you really think that I will know him after all the searching? Not at all.
I admire the inventors of the Internet who claim to supply information to the world, and not the KNOWLEDGE. Not any surfers can become knowledgeable; they only get information to use wisely or stupidly according to their nature.
I want to say that we cannot know such a concrete and famous man, how dare we claim to know the universe, its origin and its purpose? As an intelligent being, should we not decide to seek for a true Educator to open our mind?

well put! and I don't claim to know the origin or the purpose of universal existence

Is this a proof of anything?

There's a large difference between Bill Gates and god. We know Bill Gates exists. We can't state with the same certainty God does.

In case you haven't clued in yet, the Universe doesn't need an origin ("always existed" hypothesis) nor does it need a purpose (that'd be you trying to give it one where one does not exist).

If it weren't for Bill Gates you probably wouldn't be asking this question on here.

Try Wikipedia for an easy answer to your question. Short of making friends with the man, this is gonna be your best bet.

William Henry Gates III (born October 28, 1955 in Seattle, Washington) is the co-founder, chairman, former chief software architect, and former CEO of Microsoft. He is also the founder of Corbis, a digital image archiving company. Forbes magazine's The World's Billionaires list has ranked him as the richest person on earth for the last thirteen consecutive years. In 1999, Gates' wealth briefly surpassed $100 billion making him the world's first centibillionaire (as measured in U.S. dollars). According to the Forbes 2006 magazine, Bill Gates's current net worth is approximately $53 billion. When family wealth is considered, his family ranks second behind the Walton family.

Gates is one of the best-known entrepreneurs of the personal computer revolution. He is widely respected for his foresight and ambition. He is also frequently criticized as having built Microsoft through unfair or unlawful business practices. Since amassing his fortune, Gates has pursued a number of philanthropic endeavors, donating large amounts of money (about 52% of his total fortune) to various charitable organizations and scientific research programs through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, founded in 2000. On June 16, 2006, Bill Gates announced that he would move to a part-time role with Microsoft (leaving day-to-day operations management) in 2008 to begin a career in philanthropy, but will remain as chairman; the announcement coincided with decisions by billionaire Warren Buffett to double the Gates Foundation, matching contributions $1.5 billion in stock per year for 20 years.

Time magazine has ranked Bill Gates among the world's most influential people more times than any other man, and as one of only four people in history to have shaped both the 20th century and the early 21st. Time also collectively named Gates, his wife Melinda and U2's lead singer Bono as the 2005 Persons of the Year for their humanitarian efforts. That same year he was made an honorary Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II, which would entitle him to be known as Sir William Gates if he were a citizen of Britain or the Commonwealth. In 2006, Gates Foundation was awarded the Premio Príncipe de Asturias en Cooperación Internacional. In a list compiled by the magazine New Statesman in 2006, he was voted eighth in the list of "Heroes of our time".

After reading the January 1975 issue of Popular Electronics that demonstrated the Altair 8800, Gates called MITS (Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems), the creators of the new microcomputer, to inform them that he and others were working on a BASIC interpreter for the platform. In reality, Gates and Paul Allen did not have an Altair and had not written code for it; they merely wanted to gauge Dr. Ed Roberts's interest. Roberts agreed to meet them for a demo, and over the course of a few weeks they developed an Altair emulator that ran on a minicomputer, and then the BASIC interpreter. The demonstration, held at MITS's offices in Albuquerque, was a success and resulted in a deal with MITS to distribute the interpreter as Altair BASIC. Gates took a leave of absence from Harvard to work with Allen at MITS, and they dubbed their partnership Micro-Soft.
