1st of all, tatts don't hurt....i have many. And never did I let it bother me. NEVER. Pain can be controlled. ie biofeedback.
AND most of all, as for "regretting it" like a few posters have stated, I never have.AND NEVER WILL.

Ask if you can do shorter sessions, like 2 hours at a pop. Most are really cool about this. Plus, after 4 1/2 hours, their backs tend to start getting a little sore too. I know, my bro is a tattoo artist. He won't do more than 3 hours on one tattoo.

Next time, try meditating or a breathing exercise before you even begin. Then, while getting the tat done, continue with the measured breathing, but also listen to a Disc-Man or MP3 player to distract you from the sound. That should help. If not, have a single friend or someone you can carry on a good conversation with and talk to them. It definitely takes the edge off.

Im not sure what to tell you.... usually I get sleepy when I get tattoos.. I dont think (unless you are into meditation and all that) there is much you can do but grin and bear it. Good Luck... what are you getting done?

my longest session so far was six and a half hours. I chatted with my artist, listened to music, took a nap. just try to keep yourself distracted, they shouldn't hurt much

I had the sam experience. Just suck it up and eat some chocolate. I actually got lightheaded while siting for mine.

Put your ipod on and tune out to your favourite tunes. Worked for me.
