Wow...guy...I feel for you. If most of the outline is done, then your over the hump for the worst part of the pain. 4 1/2 hours is a long time. If you can go 4 hrs or even 3 hrs or maybe more if your up to it. The easiest way is to take your time...even though you want it done as fast as you can to see the finish work, it will get there. I know I have 1/3 of my back done and the spine and kidney areas was the worst for me!!! I know too that when some one makes me mad right before I walk in to get one...my mind is ready and I can tolerate the pain much better. I know for myself that I have been in so much pain for a long period of time to where I started to reject the ink, and the artist had to stop.

Ask if you can do shorter sessions, like 2 hours at a pop. Most are really cool about this. Plus, after 4 1/2 hours, their backs tend to start getting a little sore too. I know, my bro is a tattoo artist. He won't do more than 3 hours on one tattoo.

Be well prepared when you go in- make sure you've eaten something within a few hours, consider taking a mild NON PRESCRIPTION pain medication like tylenol (not valium, vicodan of anything else prescription!) about 2 hours ahead of time and plan to repeat it if you need to & it's time for the next dose.

Bring a friend to talk to. If you run out of conversation or you need sidetracking without you having to think of what to say next, have them read to you- whatever you like. I've put current movies on (client's choice) to distract people...see if the shop has a dvd player or if you can bring a laptop & play movies for yourself.

AND
It'll be done, and when it's done the pain stops and the pleasure is forever...

have someone there with you that you can talk about anything, to get your mind off of the pain. Also have something that you can bit down onto. See if you can bring in a gameboy so your mind will focus more onto that as well. A stress ball works great too. Keep thinking of things that will get your mind off of it. And keep telling yourself its worth the pain. and that its not even bad and its all in your head.

A good way to ease pain, especially with long tats, is sugary sodas, or snacks.
