Sulfur.

When you damage an onion or attack it by biting it or cutting it, sulfuric compounds in one part of the cell get to enzymes in another and make this gas that comes up and when it hits liquid in your eye, sulfuric acid.

The first two answers are correct. Some onions will have tiny particles of the juices get in your eyes. These onions are usually the ones that aren't as ripe. The flatter onions with hard roots are more ripe and will cause less crying. ;)

Onions make you cry because they contain propanethiol soxide , a gas that makes sulphuric acid when it mixes with the tears in your eyes .
