People who hold up their noses at somebody because of religious belief or disbelief are nothing else but bigots. Belief or disbelief is a very personal choice and a person who thinks that he or she is superior to an atheist or an agnostic probably has not understood his or her religion, and probably does not believe in God. Unfortunately bigots are considered religious by adherents and strong supporters of each particular faith, they end up harming their own religions more than the atheists or the agnostics.

Even more so, because even atheists have their own support groups where they actually meet in person and discuss how not real God is. Once somebody learns you're an agnostic, suddenly the religious figure you're an easy harassment target because nobody will come along to back you up. Face it: we have no traditional social networks. If you managed to build a supportive group of agnostics, it 's great, but not the norm.

Furthermore, religious people comprehend atheism, but think agnostics are "fence sitters" and refuse to recognize it as a legitimate stopping point.

So, if anything, expect even less respect because there is even less understanding of the position and even less expectation for consequences for attacks. I rarely tell anyone in real life about being an agnostic as a result... If your family is religious, telling them is probably on par with "coming out" to a bunch of homophobics.

Religious people are those who take a legalistic view of things and condemn others who do not share their views or even their denomination. Spirit-filled Christians, on the other hand, believe in loving everyone including enemies, and they are humble enough to know that they sin as much as anyone else, so they don't put their noses in the air.

Initially yes. But if you can match wits or even defeat them in philosophical conversation, they may gain a new respect for you, or get pissed off at you.

27"But I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. 29If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also. If someone takes your cloak, do not stop him from taking your tunic. 30Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. 31Do to others as you would have them do to you.
