I don't care about Iraq at all, and I do know that it was a horrible mistake going in there. The U.S. should pull out and let them take care of themselves. If they kill each other off, big deal...

If the study that quoted those figures is correct, then it's an atrocity. It's an atrocity regardless, that our presence in Iraq has caused such violence and death on innocent people. The people of Iraq are just disposable people to our government. The troops that have bravely given their lives are disposable to our government. Our government isn't bombing Iraq any longer, but their presence and the destruction of Saddam's government has made the country completly unstable, and anyone who says that Iraq isn't in the middle of a civil war, hasn't been paying attention. I believe that Saddam Hussein deserved to be deposed, but not in the manner in which he was.
Our country's leaders invaded Iraq without a true plan, and they were disastrously naive to believe that turning Iraq into a democracy was going to be an easy task. Now we're in the worst situation globally than we've been in since Viet Nam. A different sort of conflict of course, but a disaster just the same.
Our leaders need to start listening to the experts and the Generals on the ground, and the retired Generals and the world leaders who are recommending that the United States come up with another plan, one that would remove our troops OVER TIME, and give the Iraqi government notice that it's time to take charge of their own country. It may be too late, because now terrorist factions are within that country that weren't there before we invaded. What we've done to that part of the world is a disgrace. The Iraqi people didn't fly planes into buildings in New York City, but they are the ones paying the price for that, while the real perpetrators go free.

It is a terrible feeling but mostly for US troops. I look at the Fallujah massacre and it is more than obvious that troops went into that province with one thought in mind. Clear out the insurgents and if you kill others and they are innocents, too bad.
What a legacy!
I feel sorry for these young men (and now middle aged men also) coming home from this illegal (yes, illegal) war their minds totally messed up because of the things they were forced to do during this illegal (yes, illegal) war. I have deep feelings for those Iraqis who have lost family members; I pray for the entire families who have died in this illegal war.
But
I don't feel it was just US troops (UK, etc troops) that were responsible for these deaths. There are also Special Forces who basically report to no one, and there are mercenaries. And there are those who are expert at making some tragedy look as though it was "insurgents" "Batthists" "Saddam Loyalists" etc.
We will probably never know who were responsible for all of those deaths, counted or otherwise.
But I tell you.....it gives pause...the knowledge that the US has created such a field of carrion.
We need to get out....and soon.....
They are a patient group, those Iraqis, those Muslims..
We'll be looking over our shoulders for years to come.

(and please don't come back at me asking how I feel about dead US troops, because first, that's a really dumb question, and second, because it wasn't a part of this question. If you want that answer, pose another question.)

...and in reality, we don't even know how many Iraqis were killed by Saddam, keeping in mind that the US kiiled thouisands of Iraqis during the Gulf War AND buried them)

Did you actually read the report or just the parts that you liked. If you had actually read the report you would have read that 70% of those killed were killed by terrorists not by coalition forces. Further, they went door-to-door to get the numbers rather than do an actual body count. That doesn't seem like a very good way to get an accurate body count during war to me. That's about as accurate as a typical telephone poll where they call 5000 people in Berkley, CA and say it's representative of the entire U.S.

It upsets me, these innocents didn't deserve any of this.

And more and more Iraqi civilians are being killed by the day because of, we're told, "extremists".

Did you happen to see the News conference Bush held this morning when the lady asked him a question about how the Iraqi doctors are saying that 600,00+ Iraqi civilians have died since our invasion, "Do you stand by your statement in September of only 30,000?" "That 600,000 stuff is ridiculous." and went on to the next person.

I'm so so sure that it was 600,000+; but it sure of heck must of be around that number.

It's interesting that you should quote that as fact when it isn't. And saying that "It's just the way it is, like it or not"...

The report actually says that the numbers were taken from household reports and were estimates, they were not taken from body counts. It also says that no one, from our government or the Iraqi's believe the numbers are credible.

Here is a link to the report... interesting that you didn't provide the link either... hmmmm, I guess it doesn't matter if I'm Dem/Rep either... everyone can go read it for themselves.

Looking at some of the answers here, I think your point was completely lost on some.

The report was wrong? By how many? Just what number of civilian deaths makes our hands any less bloody?

Well, if they would stop blowing eachother up, the number would not be so high. I bet the insurgents have killed more people that the USA. We were way to gentle going in. By now the only breathing people in Iraq should be expats, our military and the kurds.

What does that mean? "More have died than were killed"? Does that mean many deaths occurred even though the people weren't killed? What did they die of? I don't get it.
