It is round to aid in the flush process. the previous guy got most of it right. Its not centrifugal force though. The holes where the water comes out are cut at a certain angle to create a vortex (the twirl or funnel in the water) which creates the greatest force to get the turd down the hole.

Wow, 12 years of college and I am answering this question!
OK, they are round so as the water when forced to the bowl by gravity, is boosted by introducing centrifugal force which aids in pushing the matter over the trap in the toilet and into the sewer.

omg ur Butt is not square its like in a round shape. it the toilets were square then our asses would fall in the toilet

Makes them easier to clean. Edges and corners tend to collect dirt quicker.

not all toilets are round...but the round ones are round cuz they're not square
