I will mostly be using this lens for outdoor photography and am looking more for quality than price tag.

Sony makes two add-on lenses that you'll find of interest:
One extends the wide end of the zoom by 0.7x to 26.6 mm:

and the other extends the tele end of the zoom by 1.7x to 193.8 mm:

Both retail for around $100. So for $200, you can extend your range to 27-194mm, which makes for (194/27=) 7.2x zoom.
Frankly, I'd spend that money on a better camera - but it's a possibility.

It seems that this camera does not have inter-changeable lenses as does an SLR camera. However there is a conversion lens available to boost the zoom beyond the 3x that comes with the camera. It is most likely only available from Sony. Check their website for more details.
