All drugs mimic natural chemicals. Seratonin and dopamine are the two that are the most famous in beginner's neuropsychology.

PS, about ecstacy- just because someone mentioned it. Ecstasy has three drugs in it that all force the relase of absolutely all your happy chemicals in the brain, and even in the spine.
The extreme high feels great to the more adventrous people out there- except when you crash,
it's becuse neither your brain nor your spine have any happy chemicals left AT ALL!!!

It takes two to three days to replace them, if your body is healthy. This accounts for the EXTREME LOW after the drug is taken.

And who knows if the body can repeatedly push out an emergency reload of endorphins like that? When will ti break down and leave you constantly depressed?

So, yeah, natural highs are best. Any situation in which you can get the happy chemicals going is best. Exercise helps. Healthy diet. Oh, is that annoying or what?

And one more thing: Use your facial muscles to smile, and trick your brain into thinking your happy. It's called the facial feedback hypothesis, and believe me, this works!!!!

There are, in fact, several putative compounds released in the brain that cuase you to feel 'happy' or at least not depressed.

Theses are:

1. 5-hydroxytryptamine (serotonin)
2. Dopamine
3. Nor-adrenaline
4. Endorphins
5. Other peptides

There is not simple answer and eveidence points to all of these having some contribution. The main eveidence for compounds 1-3 come from anti-depressant medications.

Fluoxetine (Prozac) is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor and as such increases the level of serotonin in the brain. This underlies its anti-depressant effects.

Maprotiline is a selective nor-adrenaline reuptkae inhibitor and increases synaptic NA levels. Maprotiline has been reported to produce a quick and more potent ant-depressant effect then Prozac.

Both these compounds also partly effect the release of dopamine, though the effect is smaller.

Endorphins and other peptides are a completely different class of endogenous compound and are released following certain environmental stimuli or continued synaptic firing. The endorphins have many effects including a pseudo-opiate effect on neurons.

Not without drugs, genetic alterations or a dramatic change of lifestyle. I can imagine that in the future they will be able alter a fetus' genes so that it overproduces dopamine, which could be useful if there is a history of depression in the child's family. I can also imagine that in the future people will be able to take dopamine shots on a regular basis as treatment. At first this will probably be regulated and limited to people with more serious depression problems. I tell you one thing though, turning a whole population into happy smiling zombies would be a gods-gift for politicians and Big Business.

RE:
What is the drug in your brain that makes you happy?

One of them is dopamine. Well, it keeps you motivated so you're not sitting around on your bum feeling sorry for yourself which only really selfish people do. I mean, if you're out thinking about other people and helping others, what time do you have to worry about yourself? This is why I believe the best cure to depression is involvement in activities and work, but only if it involves working with others. Working alone can lend too much time to think about one's self.

Also, having a healthy thyroid helps. Keeping a good diet helps too, because your brain actually needs those vitamins and minerals to function properly.

Serotonin; it's a naturally occurring chemical in the brain that amongst other things regulates mood; lack of it can cause or at least contribute to depression.

Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine), a neurotransmitter. Not a 'drug'.
