One thing I haven't been addicted to. But try diazapam (valium) avoid stress while you are withdrawing and stay out of conflict situations. make up your mind to do it and get support from a sympathic doctor and a counsellor if you can. People get addicted to morphine - which is the same stuff in hospitals all the time - and come off relatively easily. They have help and they aren't made to feel like scum for getting addicted. So don't be too hard on yourself either - we all get hooked on something.

Many self medicate by drinking alcohol, but eventually you have to stop that also, or your kidneys could fail. Getting locked up & going cold turkey worked for me & that was 40 years ago, so I guess you could call that a success. I did, however continue to experiment with other drugs (legal & illegal) for years in an "on again/off again" pattern until I got into some serious counseling. I'm 53 now & drug free for 5 years. I won't even take an aspirin because I want my body to find it's own balance without adding foreign articles into it that could cause problems with other parts of my already overstressed system. I should be dead, but for some reason, I am not. Everyone is different. I have a high pain threshold, so it takes a lot for my system to be effected by any type of a drug, & I have learned that it is best for me to keep away from all artificial additives completely to avoid the urges & cravings to self medicate myself again! It's not for everyone, but it works for me.

yes of course they can. You can do "cold turkey" which is taking your Heroin down to the lowest dose you can have and then make a decision to stop taking it. You have to prepare first though for the withdrawals: treat it like a bad flu and have flu preparations (self medicating) handy - lots of hot drinks, have baths, try flu remedies. It is very hard but can be done and has been done by many.

Using DHCs or DF118s are too difficult to do because you can buy them on the streets so its too tempting when you're withdrawing just to go get some.

Some people used to use Valium but again there iare dangerous valium tablets on the streets and you can end up in hospital.

subutex needs to be prescribed and monitored properly under supervision

So it depends on what you mean by self medicating? self medicating on what? Be sure to have some help when trying to detox either family or friends who can try and support you in this.

Short answer, yes.
A massive question however. All sorts of information out there on it. Go to http://www.cedro-uva.org/lib/cohen.heroin.html for a start and google on from there.
