I can relate. My little sister was like that. FInd a way to let her know that they won't hurt her. Next time you see a spider, make a joke or something about it. My dad used to make my sister imagine the spider dancing around in rollerblades and a funny hat. Just find a way to show her that it isnt a big deal and spiders arent harmful. Good Luck!! = )

This is a subconscious fear, so getting into a subconscious state to deal with it is a good idea. Believe it or not you don't have to be asleep to reach this state. When your daughter is relaxing deeply or in bed at night before she is asleep her subconscious is closer to being at the forefront or actually already there. Get her to imagine a safe place that allows her to feel comfortable and tell her she can go there in her mind whenever she wants. Then begin to talk about her fear and the situations that cause it. If she gets too overwhelmed, tell her to go back to her safe place and just relax. What you are teaching her is to learn how to relax so that she doesn't hold the terrified state after encountering a spider. Do this until even talking about the fear doesn't alarm her as much...then see how she reacts in a real situation...you might be surprised.

Carry her somewhere where she can see spiders are no harm. Maybe a zoo or pet store, let a professional handle the spider and explain to her that it's safe. You may want to handle the spider and show her there is no fear and encourage her to touch it.
However if she is young she may not want to overcome this fear at the moment. In most cases they overcome it or end up killing a spider before the fear is lost.
Best of Luck!

Pick u a spider yourself and let it run on your hand. She will see that it cannot hurt you. Chances are she was killed by a spider ina previous life, so do take it seriously and do help her get over it...spiders webs are the strongest things in creation and they have healing properties if put onto a wound and covered.

my daughter told her 2 daughters that the spider on the wall was her pet.
He is called Willie.
Make endearing stories of spiders, make it into a game.
Spiders in the bath are only there because they want to have a laugh.

There is a BBC Cartoon Video (probably on DVD now) called Spider - it's great fun.

But whatever you do, don't push her. You may have to seek professional counselling for her.

I'm studying psychology at the monent and have just finished the phobias section of my course.
Everytime your daughter has her fear of spiders associate it with something good that way when she sees a spider eventually she will see them as good things.
Try also discussing what they do to help her- killing gnats and getting rid of flys. That way she'll always want them around.

my son was the same. one day i found a money spider and told him it was upset because it couldn't find his mammy. my son was upset by this and so he wanted to help it. i told my son the spiders mammy was in the garden. so my little boy picked up the spider and put him outside and stayed with it a while. he was really pleased with himself for helping out the spider find it's mammy.

we talked later and i told him the bigger ones were the same as the one he was holding earlier but had just grown like he was growing. now when he sees them he may still get a bit of a shock, but nothing like before as he bonded with the little money spider.
hope this helps

Patti B how cruel!! The poor little thing would be traumatised. If she has to face that fear, she has to face it herself and not by being forced.

Take her to the GP and ask for a referral for hypnotherapy. Your daughter just needs to learn to relax. The awful feelings she experiences when she sees an eight-legged friend are just reinforcing her fear.

if you have been finding them in the house use a bug bomb to get rid of them and arachnophobia is actually quite common. Before you do anything talk to her DR and make sure he realizes how serious it is for her. He should be able to point you in the right direction to get her the proper help in order to help her stay calm. She will never like them but she could learn how to deal with the sight of one with out all of the stress.

Find out why she gets so upset at spiders and teach her how to remove them from the house without squishing them all over
