I know it sounds stupid, but when people say their measurements (bust/waist/hips) I never know where the hips are, is it around the actual hip bones or around the widest part of you...?

Hip is where your hipbones lie.
But if your widest part is below, measure the widest part.

Around the widest point of the hips, just before the upper thighs start and around the part of your butt that sticks out the most. HTH : )

I have like three different hip measurements depending on where I measure lol.

Your hip is the proximal (top) portion of your femur (thigh bone) that attaches to your pelvic bone. The top of the pelvic bone is considred your waist. I'll try and help you find your hips. Sit in a chair with your feet placed evenly on the floor. Place your hands on the sides of your pelvic bone with your fingers pointed to your chair. The base of the palm of your hand should be at your waist. Now move your knees in and then out. The groove or space you feel when you do this is your hips.

they mean where your hip bones are. but if a bit below the hip bones is wider you might want to measure there.
