Yes you can do it genetically. It's called cross fertilization. You just take the male part of the seed of one tree and the female fart of the seed of another and presto chango. it's much easier to do with blooming plants though. Like flowers, such as the flowers of a cherry tree.

It wasn't the leaf, it was the bud or a small section of stem. (Your father may have used the petiole (leaf stem) as a handle to help in the budding process) Budding and grafting are commonly used today in the nursery industry to put a desired fruit or flower (as in the case of roses) on a different root stock. The two different plants must be close relative, that is you can't graft an orange onto an apple, but is is quite common to graft several different apples onto yet a different apple or several different citrus growing onto another citrus tree.

There is not genetic crossing, each graft or bud bears true.

you will not get a fruit that is mixed..you will get another fruit growing on the same tree..that is what is known as "grafting"...the new branch is "grafted" onto the host tree. It is done all over for roses,,,lemon/lime lemon/grapefruit../all types of trees..not only fruit trees.

What you're talking about is called grafting, which technically isn't crossing (genetic mixing, hybridization). Many crop trees are grafted onto related rootstocks for various reasons (disease resistance, size).

It is possible to cross the different species of same genera But it lead to the Hybrid of these 2 species which have dominant characters of both the speciecs One problem is that the most of the hybrids are sterile in nature
