A fronta lobotomy. They used to remove the frontal lobe of the brain because it is the part which deals with emotions including anger so afterwards the patient became unemotional.

Unfortunately emotions are also what go to make up a personality so that was lost in the operation too.

frontal lobotomy
It's used when people have erratic thought patterns or seizures. It's usually a last ditch attempt to help some huge problem associated with the brain.
The procedure involves removing the front lobe of the brain while leaving the rest intact.
For those having seizures it can be good, but I don't think it ever is the best answer.

Lobotomy, also known as a leukotomy was popular before the mid 1950s because alternative treatments were scarce. "There was no other way of treating people who were seriously mentally ill," he says. "The drugs weren't introduced until the mid-1950s in the United States, and psychiatric institutions were overcrowded... [Patients and their families] were willing to try almost anything"

Lobomies were done regularly in the 1950's. I don't think they are done anymore. I believe research has proven that they were more harmful than helpful. Now a days, ECT is done which can also cause personality changes as a side effect.
