I hate to be too pragmatic, because as the other posters have said, she probably is grateful to you for feeding her and is affectionate, but I think what she is doing is akin to using a scratching post, and strenghting and flexing her claws, only she's batting the air in lieu of having a nice rough surface to scratch, it is instinctual for cats to do this.

Hopefully though, you'll love her and keep her, get her shots done and tested for Feline Leukemia...

Did it look like she was "kneading" dough? For a cat it means she feels comfortable and secure and loves you....even if she gets skittish around humans...just the fact that she knows she's being taken cared of will make her feel like that. I have this stray black cat in my backyard. I feed her everyday and when she sees me she meows and starts to "knead" the ground and her eyes kind of closes half way but she still too scared to let me pet her.

I rescued a cat who did this -- she was very cold, waiting in a cement driveway for some dinner in the dark and cold of a December night.

Animals will lift one foot and then another when it is too hot (l have seen lizards do this in the desert on TV), or when the ground is very cold.

The cat remembers the time when it suckled and the pleasure it gave. Kittens do this to stimulate the mother's milk producing glands.

My ginger cat used to do this! He only did it when he wanted something, say, before feeding time or if he wanted to go out.

So perhaps yours is asking to come in?

Cats are very bright and they know when they are being loved. It is showing you it appreciates you and wants to come in. Be aware, once they know you are kind to them, they alert the "kittie media". Others will come. My cats find me.

what you have described bears a similarity to a nursing - like motion that cats do when they are in a state of contentment. :-P

She's happy and content and comforting herself. Some people call it "kneading" - it mimics the motion she made when she was nursing from her mom. So, she's pleased with you....
