This is the cutting of the fold of skin inside the upper lip (the f. labii superioris). My daughter has an overgrowth of this tissue and I am scared to take her to an oral surgeon at such a young age. It has grown onto her gums between her two front teeth causing a gap between her baby teeth. It also has grown the other way onto the inside of her lip slightly. Should I be alarmed? Is she too young to have this procedure? What happens if I wait? Will this affect her adult teeth?

Don't do the surgery until she is 5 or 6 and you can see how the maxilla grew. There is zero harm in waiting that late and you might end up not having to put her through it. There is nothing abnormal about a gap between baby front teeth.

I did this procedure to 3 of my neices and nephews as well as about 100 other children over 30 years and it's not a big deal, really, but why do it now when it would be so traumatic for her?

My son had this procedure when he was 2. He had no ill effects, no pain etc. In fact it was the best move for us to make. Before having this procedure my son did not talk, that is partly because his tongue was involved also.........after the procedure he learned to talk within a short period of time. I wish someone had noticed this and helped us with it sooner. If you are nervous or concerned talk with your ENT doctor they will be able to answer any questions that you may have. They would also be the ones to perform the surgery if you decided to go that route. The ENT can also give you the pro's and con's of the situation on both side aspects.......leaving it and fixing it. I hope this helps you and in my opinion I think that you ought to go ahead and get this procedure done before she starts to realize that she is slightly different from others. This will lower her self esteem and yes they do notice this much sooner than u than u think. Good luck.

My son had this procedure when he was seven. He suffered no ill effects, needed no pain relievers stronger than Tylenol, and was fully recovered within two days. His regular dentist performed this procedure, not an oral surgeon, and the only anesthetic needed was local. Trust me, it was harder on me than it was on him. Have the procedure. If you wait for the adult teeth to come in, she might need to get braces.
