I try to mail out the birthday invitations about 5 weeks before the party. If it is a busy time of year for parties (halloween, x-mas) I would maybe give up to 7 weeks notice.

For a birthday, if it's not over a holiday (big party/ family gathering times) I would say two full weeks. If it's a Christmas time birthday or a New Years birthday or something along those lines, I would go closer to a month - but no longer than that!

At least 2 weeks in advance is good. I wouldn't send out any more than 3 1/2 weeks though.

Mail them out 2 weeks a head of time, that way the recipient has a little over a week. Not too early that they forget, and usually in enough time that they have not made other plans.

no more then 2-3 weeks. Anything longer, people will tend to forget and in that case the person who will suffer the most is your son.
2-3 weeks in plenty for people to make arrangments and buy a gift.
