it's been my experiance that different breeds of dogs are smarter then others. For example, a well bred german shepard dog should have the mentality of a 13 year old child. Consider how smart that is. On the other hand, some dogs have instincts so bred into them, that it's all they can think of. (husky's want to pull, terriors want to bark, etc.)
Cats on the other hand, may not exibit such intelligence, but are incredibly smart. Their independence makes them this way. They are smart enough not to stray to far from home, potty train themselves and have a keen sense of their owners. They always know when it's a good time to move in for a good snuggle, or stay away till a later time. Dogs will want a good pet or snuggle anytime, without consideration of their owners. They are more "needy" then cats. I guess it's all a matter of preferance. I love them both. I appreciate both charactoristics.

Well, kind of like people, it depends on the cat or dog at hand. I have 3 dogs, 4 cats, 5 fish, 2 birds... On any given day, one of them is being a complete moron. =)
Cats can be trained as well as dogs, they just take longer. It's not that they don't get it. It's that they don't *want* to do tricks. One of my cats has figured out how to turn handles to go into rooms. I'm not joking. He stretches up to put his paws on the handle and starts turning. He also gets bored with games, I bought a laser for them to chase around the house, it takes him about 60 seconds to figure out that I'm doing it, so then he walks up to me and puts his paw on the laser and calls it quits.
He's too dang smart for his own good.
So now, same with dogs. One of the dogs is too smart for his good too. He does sneaky things to get what he wants but not quite like my cat.
In general, I think it probably comes out even. For every Eddie(Moose on Frasier) there's a dumb as a brick dog out there and same thing for cats...

Cats are definitely smarter. They are so smart that they don't perform tricks for you, except when it suits their own purposes. When they sit there looking at you with those gleaming eyes they're really plotting a secret mission to take over the world.

Cats can take care of themselves. They use a litter box or bury their excrement in the soil outdoors. They can catch their own food (birds, mice, etc.). They groom themselves. So, if a cat stays at your house and loves you, it's because the cat LOVES you. Dogs, on the other hand, are totally dependent on humans for their care. They aren't as smart as cats but they are so darn loveable! I love both cats AND dogs. There's a cute saying: Dogs have Masters; Cats have Staff. Hahaha.

Well.....it depends...I've known many stupid dogs...and then you have the really smart one. Same with cats. Their social level however is very different. Dogs are naturally very social, and need and need to communicate more than cats. Cats are smart, sometimes a smartass lol but they give you a lot of space, because they are more independant.

My cats like turning on water faucets on to get water or play in it. It's easy for them to turn it on. They want to open doors but unfortuanantly my cats paws are too soft to be able to turn the door knobs...so they'll just scratch make me open it for them :P

Dogs can learn more words than cats can, and they're probably smarter. Unless cats are really the ones who have it all figured out and just aren't telling us. ;)

I think it depends on the individual animals. Both cats and dogs can be smart or stupid.

Cats of course! They don't go around chasing their tails. Plus cats can clean themselves... that's always good.
