The over the counter remedies don't work well. If you aren't improving, call the doctor and get medicine that needs prescription.

. It looks like a rash of tiny blisters that are very, very close together. The skin gets really warm to the touch and the blisters pop and it itches like crazy. It almost looks like a burn.
You don't have to go directly into poison ivy to get it, you just have to come in contact with something that has poison ivy oil on it. Even a pet getting the oil on it's fur could give it to you.
If you suspect you have it I would recommend using a poison ivy scrub. You can find it at the drugstore.(It's kinda pricey, but worth it). It eliminates poison oils, cures itching, and speeds up the healing process. Also try taking some Benadryl tablets. Make sure you wash everything you were

I so feel for you! I am entirely sorry to tell you that your symptoms will persist for a couple of weeks. I had poison ivy for the first time a couple of months ago and almost went insane. I tried a miriad of products. Check out the site poisonivy.aesir.com. There's a lot of advice there. I used "Ivy Stat" and it worked pretty good. The package comes with both a shower soap to work on the blisters and then a clear lotion to apply to help with the itching. Caladryl does work really well too, but the weird pink color wasn't very appealing. Also, try taking Benedryl, that did help me a lot as well (though it made me sleepy). The MOST relieving thing of all for me was a REALLY HOT shower or bath. The transfer of feeling intense itching to the almost burning sensation was oddly ecstatic. But, since one can't spend the day in the bathroom...try Ivy Stat.

Dermarest
It is a medicated Poison Ivy Mousse. It works really well for me. It has a built in film that keeps the medicine in place for hours. It really helps relieve the itch. You just shake the can, and then put a liberal amount in your hand and apply as often as you need to.

I get it a Neighborcare Pharmacies. Other places may carry it though.

It has 5% Kaolin as the active ingredient. I swear, it really works. I used to use Calamine lotion or rubbing alcohol until I found this product.

My husband just got over a 4 week bout of poison ivy... at first he used a cream called Ivarest . It is an 8 hour maximum strength itch cream. It does contain antihistamine. And it worked really well for him at first. The thing is that poison ivy spreads everytime you scratch it. You will most likely need to go the doctor to get a shot and be put on a round of steroids to get rid of it. However, at first the dr. or pa my husband saw tried to put him on zyrtec for the itching. It did not help. The shot and steroids got rid of it. Not sure about the alcohol that was suggested. It needs to dry out, but I think that would irritate it more. Too dry will also cause it to itch. Hope this helps some.

My son gets poison ivy at least twice a year very badly. Believe me, I've bought everything over-the-counter from Ban deodorant (plain, no aloe) for itching to Zanfel, which is over $35.00 a tube. NONE of the stuff works. Once, I ended up in the ER with him. When he breaks out now, I save my money and just go to the doctor's office and get prescription medication. Works EVERY time.

Hope you get better soon. It's some nasty stuff, I know.

Use Calamine lotion twice daily until it dries up, and if the itching is bad take Benadryl 25-50mg (adult dose)by mouth as needed every 4-6 hours. Benadryl makes most people sleepy so be careful.
A long time ago doctors would tell you to put household chlorine bleach in your bath water if you had a severe case. I forgot the bleach/water dilution ratio but I wouldn't go over 1:10(one part bleach to ten parts water). Stop using cortizione. Also, say your prayers.
Hope you feel better soon.

Poison ivy contains a sticky oil in its leaves that irritates the skin.

First you need something to remove the oil. i suggest you find a mild soap like dawn (safely removes oil from the feathers of ducks caught in oil spills). Regular dish soap is far milder than bath soaps. DON'T use the Antibacterial type as this will only further irritate.

Next, try to find a good skin salve; it looks like other people have posted many types. I have heard alot about Calamine lotion, but you should probably talk with a dermatologist or nurse to find what is best.

And don't itch. Itching breaks open your skin and spreads the irritating oil deep into your skin tissue.

An epsom salt bath.
I have a son who always seemed to seek out poison ivy and/or it would seek him out so I was always trying to heal up poison ivy itches and symptoms and it is an uphill battle until it has run it's course.
As soon as you can get those blisters dried up,the sooner the itch etc will end.
Dry up the blisters with epsom salt, table salt and baking soda baths.
After they dry and break and start to leave there will still be some itch and believe it or not but Preparation H cream will help relieve the itch.
Good Luck
