Considering millions served, you couldn't handle the information on your own. We're talking something like 9 million men and women during the Second World War alone. It would take you even years as a research fellow on multiple grants to dig through all that information.
If you're just talking about your grandfather, ask him. If he's passed away, first ask your grandmother (or any other relative) if she has any mementos, keepsakes, letters from your grandfather.
If you want specific information on your grandfather's service record, contact the National Archives:
http://aad.archives.gov/aad/series-list.jsp?cat=WR26
And be warned they do not have a complete directory, as extensive as their records are.
Finally, read every history book describing the events of the time period you can get your hands on. Your grandfather, in whatever capacity he served, was part of that last Greatest Generation. Every sacrifice everyone made reflects that glory on all who served.

Not asking for much are you? You want the names of all the people that served in WWII. That is hundreds of thousands of people. If you want to know about your grandfather, either ask him or if he's no longer alive find out where he served and look for books. There is a ton of information at the library that can help you.

massive database - contact his branch of service and request HIS records ( these are public records and can be released but it's easier to go through a veterans group - just do a ***WW2 - ( branch of service ) veterans*** search

I don't really know of a "master list of all those who served in WWII", kiddo....did you do a search on his name? If you know what branch of the service he was in, you could start there...
