There ARE other reasons, such as stress, but many people grind or clench their teeth because they do not meet exactly correctly. If your teeth do not meet correctly, they cause your jaw to shift slightly out of the joint to compensate for the mismatch in your bite. A bite appliance - when properly made - will eliminate the influence of the teeth over the position the bones take in the TMJ. It will allow your jaw to rest in the balanced (and comfortable) position where it belongs. After wearing an appliance for a while, your dentist might suggest some adjustments to your bite, slightly altering (grinding) the surfaces so that they no longer have any interferences to closing with your jaw in the proper position.

Some people say that you clench or grind your teeth at night due to pent up anger. My ex used to do it and it was very annoying (and bad for your teeth and jaws). Try getting a mouth guard. Another trick that works for some people is to try to keep your jaw relaxed and your front teeth apart (not clenched together) during the day and as you go to sleep

They have mouth gards at night to stop you from clenching/grinding your teeth. You could try a therapist but until then I'd invest in a night guard (or whatever they're called)

First of all you should talk to your dentist about this. It is actually possible to break teeth if this habit continues.
Usually the clenching of the jaws at night indicates stress or deep seated anger or frustration. You might consider looking at your life; problems at home or work or any other problem that you are not dealing with.
Good luck.

HI Skorpio,
I too have this problem. Been doin it for years. Its probably stress related.
My jaws and teeth used to hurt and the dentist noticed wear on the fillings. He made me a mouthguard of silicone rubber, custom molded so it fits the best. Check with your health insurance if this is covered cause it is your best choice over the OTC ones. I like the detail of Dr. Sam's answer the best . Is your BF a light sleeper? Do both of you a favor and get the mouth guard.
So ,Take good care of your teeth girl, they do more than just take nice pictures! They are vital to good health!

You need to get a mouth guard made from your dentist so you can wear it to sleep at night. This prevents you from wearing down your enamels and ease tension on your jaw.
I recently had to get a mouth guard made because the dentist said I must grind my teeth at night because my enamels are wearing down. I have to wear it to sleep so I won't grind my teeth.
Actually my dentist and her staff wear one too. So, this phenomena is quite common when we are sleeping. Umh, I wonder what I will be dreaming about tonight?
The mouth guard is of rubbery texture. It was molded from my front teeth. You only need the upper one done and it was covered by insurance.
Don't know the reason why we grind or clench our teeth. Could be stress related.

Another name for it is bruxism - it's an actual well documented condition which is usually treated by using dental appliances such as a night guard - I wear mine during the day as well. Go to your dentists asap - when I was growing up there wasn't the treatment available then that there is today and the longer it goes on the worse the problems.

There are OTC mouth guards you can get to help you deal with the clenching. My furture B-I-L has this problem and it can be really bad for your teeth, so you might want to at least get the guard soon.
There are a bunch of reasons really that you do it and I'm not sure why he does it. I do it sporatically and it seems to be triggered by stress.

Your grinding your teeth. It must be hereditary, my mother grinds her teeth as well as my son. I've been grinding my teeth for a very long time. I have asked so many Dr's about this situation because my jaw hurts, I get headaches and my teeth are being worn down. My dentist told me to wear a retainer at bed time to help with my teeth. My husband notices the difference. Talk to your dentist...

You can't really fix it. You can get a Night Guard from walmart or a more expensive one from your dentist.
Either way you should do something, clenching your teeth can cause tiny fractures that eventually make your teeth break.
