My 3 yr old knows his abc's, how to count, shapes, and colors. We are now learning actual letter and number recognition, but I feel as if he should be learning more? What else is there?
Thank You.

He should be able to recognize his first name in writing. He may or may not be ready to start working on writing it.

He should know his full name.

He should know his parents first and last names.

He should learn your phone number and address.

He should learn how to hold a pencil/crayon properly.

He should learn how to hold scissors and how to cut. A lot of kids come into KG unable to use scissors well. I've heard many KG teachers say this is an important skill to work on.

Since he knows how to count already, I'd work on matching objects 1:1. In other words, applying those counting skills. This is the number 1. That is 1 toy car. This is the number 4. That is 4 toy cars.

You can start working on letter sounds if he already knows his letters well and can recognize them consistently. The Leap Frog Letter Factory DVD is GREAT for help with this, as are their talking fridge magnets.

On top of what you've already mentioned, those are all good skills for him to have by the time he starts KG.

Preschool isn't about just learning abc's silly. Preschool is about learning to be social while going over basic things like abc's and 123's. If you want to do the right thing by your son let him have this year to learn how to be a friend. I took my son out of pre-school because I thought I could do a better job than his teacher when in reality I couldn't expose him to what the students in the class were. You can't teach your child how to get along with different personalities and what to expect later. My son has a really hard time with other kids. He's very shy because I didn't give him the chance to learn in pre-school. He is however really smart but he'd rather be smart and have friends. Good luck to you in your decision making.

My son's preschool has lots of fun units that teach skills they need to know in addition to reading and writing basics.

Here are the monthly themes this year:

Self/Family and Homes
Clothing
Nutrition and Safety
Grandparents/Celebrations
Boxes and Brushes (not sure what this is...guess I'll find out in January!)
Nursery Rhymes/Fairy Tales
Jobs In Our World
Taking Care of Our World
Pets

Right now in his clothing unit they have a big cube with lots of buttons, snaps, zippers and laces and they work on those and talk about the different types of clothes we wear and why. They also talk about things like dental health and how to stop spreading germs, that sort of stuff.

Hope this helps :)

I don't know if your child is ready but I have one enrolled in greek school. She enjoys it very much and has grasped a new language as easy as 123-abc. However, I think the social skils are also very important. Don't be to over concerned with education that your child is shy or scared. My oldest, now 11 and an honor student, did't walk, talk or speak at the "appropriate" time by Doctors standards. We did't push her and she is doing great!!!! If you think you childs ready introduce new things and see what happens.

He's getting socialization skills. Also my niece learned some spanish but what you listed sure is an awful lot I would imagine they wouldn't be able to teach much more than that in a school year♥

Besides learning the basics listed above they learn how to interact with other children their age. My son knows the thing's that you have listed but is always telling me about something new that he learned at school (daycare, he's almost 3). From firetrucks to the animals on Old McDonald's Farm. It is good for them to be in preschool in my opinion.

My son attends a great preschool .He started at 21/2 yrs the first year was all about socialization with kids , speaking , asking questions , playing fairly and listening to instructions .These were all incorporated in activities geared to enhancing these skills . The second year was mixed with academics . The kids at this school are really exceptional , they do basic swimming , gymnastics and computer literacy and integrate real well at the next level. .
Basically what I am trying to say is that you need to ensure your kid is a well rounded individual who wont have to play catch up in any category at any point in his /her life until they are set to make their own choices.

They will learn to follow the rules. They will work with glueing stuff. How to share. They will learn a lot. When I had my child in preschool, I asked the teacher and they gave a run down on all that will be taught.

I think preschool helps with social development, hence, my three y/o is at a Montessori three days a week for 2 1/2 hours per day. He really likes having friends! He just got invited to his first birthday party and is so excited! It is also a way to help me meet people............
