Well, a picnic dinner is always a challenge. They key is generally have something that you can eat with your hands. Even putting a plate down on a blanket while on a beach while you're trying to cut into a steak or something is just begging to get a mouthful of sand. For less formal meals, I always prefer a good quality baguette, a couple nice cheeses and a bottle of wine. If you're willing to forgo larger pieces of protein and sides, you can always do a good baguette, cheese, sliced prosciutto or jamon serrano, maybe some sliced mozz, slices of fresh in-season veggies or something like that. If you're looking for something a little bigger, if it's not going to be a long drive to the beach, I'd recommend a basket of fried chicken.

A tray with an assortment of cheeses, fresh fruit like sliced apple, grapes, sliced kiwi, orange wedges, strawberries, stuffed olives and either bread or crackers or both. You can have meat if you like, but usually the cheese is a meat substitute. Bring a beverage, like your favorite wine or hot cocoa in a thermos. Be sure to bring wine glasses for the wine or mugs for the hot chocolate. If you want something sweet, bring cookies, brownies, cream puffs or chocolate eclairs.
None of these things are filling and can be eaten with your hands. Will be fun to feed each other too.

Cheese Platter

Thinly slice different kinds of cheeses. Provolone, cheddar, American, pepper jack, Gouda, string cheese sticks, whatever kind you like, and as many flavors as you like.

Cold sliced deli meats, ham, turkey, roast beef, chicken breast, salami, and any other you desire

Fruits, grapes (green, and/or red), strawberries, sliced bananas, watermelon cut in chunks, rasberries, blueberries, cherries, and hunks of pineapple, slices of green, yellow, and red apples, whatever fruits you wish, just make them bite-size, to eat with your fingers, or a small fork. (black and green olives, if you like)

Triangular sliced toast, I used sourdough, but again you can use many different kinds, rye, dark rye, wheat, white, whole grain, whatever you fancy, just toast it, and slice it diagonally to make it into a fancy shape. Cut the crusts off.

Place your ingredients on a platter, and arrange them around in a fancy style, if you don't have a seperater platter. Arrange the toast, if you used different kinds, every other flavor around the outside, then in the inner part, overlap the cheese around, every other flavor, then the fruit(if your fruits are juicy, and wet, take them to your picnic in a seperate container from the rest of the ingriedients, and assmble the platter, at your picnic), and on the inside center of the platter, set your meats in bulk, but not flatly, you want your meat to look appetizing, so lay it curled. A fun thing to do is to lay a layer of one meat, then another differnt meat, then another, and another, so when you reach for a slice of meat, it will be a different one. Ham, then roast beef, then turkey, etc. You can also serve as meat in the center, cold chicken breast, cooked seasoned and flavored, and cut in chunks. The idea here is finger foods, quickness, simplicity, and easy clean-up.

Bring fancy papertowels, or napkins with you meal, a bottle or 10, lol, of nice red and/or white wines. Giving your guest a choice will make them smile. Besides, you will probably want to concentrate more on each other than the food! LOL

Have a GOOD time!

bread cheese wine strawberries
I like a fresh french baguette, with assorted cheeses (ie; gruyere, brie/camenbert, havarti, swiss, gouda, munster), some pate (depends where you live, braunswager is a good stand in if you don't have pate available) and nice dry red wine ( I like merlot) and some chocolate dipped stawberries. Simple, elgant and romantic!

Buy the strawberries already dipped or make them yourself
2 pints strawberries, with stems if possible
1 1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips (or milk chocolate chips)
2 tablespoons corn syrup
6 tablespoons butter

Wash strawberries and pat dry.
Place on paper towels until they reach room temperature.
Melt chocolate chips, corn syrup and butter in a double boiler, stirring occasionally.
Remove from heat and dip each strawberry into chocolate, coating 2/3 of strawberry.
Allow excess chocolate to drip off into pan.
Place stem side down on waxed paper covered baking pan or cookie sheet.
Refrigerate until set, about 15-20 minutes.

well first do not make any crunchy food. crunching is not very attractive.. pack fruits like grapes, you know foods you can feed each other with. also no foods you have to use your hands with or suck. with the fruits serve wine.
