I wanted to look at a house and the person e-mailed me and said "the house used oil for heat are you sure you want to look at it?" Does any of you use oil for heat? What does this mean, do I have to go buy oil, is this method of heating more expensive. I feel stupid but just thought you may be able to answer. Thanks

It means it has an oil furnace, as in it burns oil to produce heat. It can be expensive depending on a number of factors; how well insulated is the house, how expensive oil is, how high you set the thermostat, how old the heating system is, etc. If you are careful, it's no more expensive than electric heat. Yes you have to buy the oil. It's usually delivered to a tank on the property by a truck.

The house has an oil furnace.
You purchase oil from a fuel company and store it in a tank either in your basement or outside your house.
These tanks are 50 gals or larger. The price of heating heating oil coincides with the price of gasoline, meaning when gas goes up so does home heating oil......

With house heated by the oil there is a consideration of the environmental pollution through seepage of the oil into the soil.
When buying the house make sure that there is not problem. Hire a knowledgeable, licensed, environmental inspector. Health Department should give a list of such inspectors in your area.
