My Dad has so many telemarketers call his house all hours of the day and night. He is 74 years old and doesn't need to be bothered with these calls all the time. I heard on the radio a while back that there is a number you can call to block these people. Does anyone know what it is?

Thanks to everyone who answered. I just registered his number and hopefully that will take care of the problem.

I use the "Do Not Call" Registry. I think you can find it on line, as I don't have the number right off hand. This organization imposes a fine on businesses that use telemarketers who call despite the names on their do-not-call list. It doesn't block callers, but if they persist, you can report them and they are subject to rather stiff fines, as well as the companies they work for.

However, it supposedly exempts calls from charitable organizations, which are just as pesky as the ones that are trying to sell stuff. I usually tell them I have already donated all I can for the year, and then thank them and hang up before they have a chance to present any arguments. Or some people go a step further and say they have just declared bankruptcy, or they can't talk now because their house is on fire, or their partner just died from Aids. I don't go to those extremes, however.

As for your dad being bothered, I would either get him a phone with caller ID, so he doesn't have to answer the phone for anyone except those he knows, get him an answering machine to screen the calls, or simply hang up on the pests.

You can register your cell phone and your landline phone. They also have links on the website if you continue to get calls you can report businesses. I only have a cell phone and have noticed that after I registered my number I rarely get telemarketer calls.

Go to www.donotcall.gov to register your phone numbers. Telemarketers will no longer be able to call you.

The above answers are correct, after I registered my phone numbers, it only took a little while before the calls stopped. But- charities are exempt from this law (darnit).
