My favourite dogs are long haired dauchshunds.

All doxies have BIG personalities, and I do mean BIG. They are the center of the house. They will be the dominant dog in most homes (unless there is a chihuahua of course, lol) but they don't have the annoying sides of most little dogs.

in fact i would say, doxies don't realise they are little dogs. My last Doxie, Buddy (rip dear friend) I had to keep on a short leash, the one time I had him on an extended leash, he attacked an Alaskan Malamute. (of course had it so chose, the Malamute would have eaten him as a snack, but Buddy didn't care.) They have courage up the wazoo. What would you expect in a breed bred to kill Badgers.

As for liking the Long Haired better than the smooth coat or the wire hair, in my experience, they are also more loving, and love to cuddle more.

Hope this helps!

Got to be Border Collies. I have three and there is never a dull moment at my house. These are very loyal dogs. Mine don't care about frisbees. They are too smart to be left idle and must have some activity to do such as herding, agility, etc. If you don't have sheepies for them to work ...exercise, exercise, exercise or they will make up their own job which could result in you repeatily saying "Bad dog...bad dog!" My dogs are with me all the time. They seldom hear "bad dog"....wait....what the ???...HEY!... Get out of there!.......I gotta go!!!!!!

The Bullmastiiff. Bullmastiffs have wonderful, expressive faces. They are loyal and fiercely protective as well as good judges of who has ill intent. They have natural guardian instincts and will defend their owners with their lives. They do this not by mauling but by knocking down the person and sitting on them until backup arrives.

Old English Sheepdog. They are great with kids and older people. They are very affectionate and they don't shed. The only problems that I have seen is that if you don't keep them up on grooming they get matted and look bad. and they "herd" you into things, like cupboards where you keep the treats and little kids. It goes back to their instinct
