Cause - People drink for every reason imaginable , happy sad, up down, to deal with pain, because they got a promotion...You name ..People drink to it...
Effect- You get drunk and lose your motor skills and is is in effect a way of sedating yourself...For some with addiction issues...It can completely destroy them...One drink is too many and a million never enough...they usually end up in recovery or jail or dead eventually...Hopefullyrecovery...thos folks live honest examined lives....Lennon....
Most people can drink without all those consequences if it is done with moderation...alcaholics however can never drink with success...

I am going to assume you mean alcohol abuse. If you do indeed mean alcohol check ETOH in a good chemistry book
Alcohol abuse is an over or inappropriate use of alcohol. It is similar to other drugs of abuse such as nicotine and heroin. About 5 % of any given population seems to disappear into what ever substance of abuse you happen to have. This stays fairly constant no matter if you look at English gin drinkers in the Victorian era or Chinese opium smokers during the colonial period. Therefore, most people believe that a propensity for abuse is a hereditary disorder. A number of means of treatment have been tried over the years from giving LSD to alcoholics to AA meetings. No one treatment has been shown to be much better than the rate of spontaneous recovery which is around 30% and increases with age. Many substance abusers burn out in their 40's and resume a more normal lifestyle. However, with alcohol or cigarettes much physical damage has been done. The amount of damage done by alcohol both to its users, their families and the public in general is tremendous. Alcohol in involved in a very high percentage of violent crime and auto deaths. Despite this little funding is available for either treatment or research.

The cause of alcohol is yeast and other little beasties like that growing in a vat of sludge. Delicious sludge.

- being a jerk
- waking up naked in a public park
- loving your fellow humans
- fighting your fellow humans
- hangovers
- secret missions/adventure
- fetal alcohol syndrome
- stealing railroad signs
- beer goggles
- wanting to permanently erase the previous night
- having the time of your life
