I agree that Southern California is not the place to be. Mid to North California would be much better.

I recommend Merced, CA. It is centrally located to San Francisco, Sacramento, Yosemite, Modesto and Fresno. Located in the San Joaquin valley it is absolutely beautiful.

Yeah, its expensive. Yeah, there is traffic and smog. Do they have those in Northern California, yes.
That being said - massage is probably going to be more popular up north, but if you're tied into Southern Cal try the Valley - like Northridge, Studio City, Burbank, Toluca Lake. Its hot and smoggy there, probably worst for that in all of southern cal. Pasadena is a very nice town about 10 miles north of downtown, but very pricey.

Although CA is expensive place to live it's worth the money with it's stunning beaches, awesome food, and beautiful fashions. Here are some ideas: Fresno, Los Angeles, Brentwood, Burbank, Toluca Lake, and to many more to list. Here is a map of places: http://www.laalmanac.com/LA/lamap2.htm

Check out Orange County. It is close to LA and has plenty of spas and salons. The cost of living in the O.C. and much of LA is very high. You may be in for some commuting, but, the weather is the best all year-round.

i lived in el toro which is about 50 miles south of :LA but i wouldnt want to live in the south anymore. if you want a good place try sacramento and surrounding area. there is a place just north called placerville. but i would go even farther north. you might consider lake tahoe.
