I am getting my boyfriend of 3 years a puppy for Christmas, cuz this is what he wants. But I don't know what kind of puppy to get him. I got him a pitbull puppy our 1st christmas together but she died 6 months ago. What can I get him?? But can't be a pitbull, cuz I already have one. No little dogs or Labs either.

I like the big breeds, a.i. pitbull, dobermans, akitas, huskys, etc.. I have plenty of time for a large dog, as well as my boyfriend. The DOG I got him 2 christmases ago, was hit by a car, it didn't just randomly die.

Ok, let me restate my question. I want you to tell what your favorite dog is and why. I'm trying to decide on a breed for my boyfriend's christmas present.

That's terrible about the other puppy.
I show Labs so I would recommend them but since you said no to them what about my second favorite dog, Siberian Huskies? They need LOTS of exercise and mental stimulation, plus the can be stubborn so not for a first time dog owner, but they are such wonderful dogs. If I didn't have to work, I would have them in a heartbeat. Also what about a German Shepard? They are a herding breed so high energy also. If you live out in the eastern states there are still dog shows going on. I would recommend that you go to one and see what breed appeals to you, then talk to the people at ring side about them. They will always be more than happy to help although you may find some a little terse about being disturbed before showing. Just give them a card or something so they can contact you when they are available. We never mind people asking questions, just we become focused on what's going on in the ring and marking our catalogs so we don't like being bugged by "pet people"! ;-)

If you like big dogs, go with the biggest: Old English Mastif. The males get up to 250lbs
the females around 200. I must worn you though, An Olde English can eat around $200 per month of food, not to mention treats.

They are a truly loving family dog. You need the space for them though, no apartments (of course you know that none of the larger breeds is good for apartments)

Hope this helps!

A two year old puppy dying?? That's odd but I am sorry for the loss.....but why the restrictions on the two breeds if you know you like the breed? There are a ton of breeds out there and each one is slightly different. We need to know more about what you're looking for before we can just shout out random dog breeds.

For instance, how much time do you have for exercise? How little is little? etc etc.

We own 4 dogs, a lab mix and 3 huskies. 2 of the huskies are 5mths old. If you are willing to deal with a dog that sheds a lot, huskies are wonderful. Our huskies are so loving and good with kids and although they are stubborn, with work huskies are trainable.

The only thing about them is that they cannot be off-leash unless they are in a fenced area. We go to the dog park every weekend to allow them to run.

Bull mastiff
Staffordshire Terrier
Rhodesian Ridgeback
Rottweiler
Boxer

If you're going for the large and bulky theme, anyway. Personally, I think the neatest dog is a Belgian Malinois, they are extremely intelligent, loyal, and obedient.

Try going to www.akc.org and checking out the Working breeds, most of those are large, solid dogs with similar personalities to pit bulls.

awww. thats a shame that the dog died. I think you should get him a keeshound. they are reliable, easy to train, and they live very long. Trust me. I am an owner of an 12 year old keeshound

How did the pit bull die after only 2 years? Maybe you should get him a stuffed animal toy

I would not buy him another puppy. We don't know the reason why the first one died, but either way someone was not looking after it properly. Either lack of supervision or veterinary care.
How about a stuffed toy dog?
