Just so you dont ring RSPCA on me.... we only give him about 1/2 a finger of kitkat a day, its not like we give him a tenner and send him down the shop to take his pick. He has such sad old eyes and makes us feel really guilty for eating it and not sharing. BUT anymore, we wont give it to him. i didnt know it could really kill him, just thought it was an old wives tale. Thanks for all the advice.

There are many misconceptions about chocolate and dogs. Dogs are allergic to cocoa. The darker the chocolate, the higher the level of cocoa. If you give a dog very dark chocolate, it is dangerous. However, milk chocolate can be used as an occasional sweet because it probably wont make the dog sick unless he gets it in large amounts. White chocolate is perfectly fine for dogs because it has no cocoa content.

Basically, dont give your dog chocolate in excessive amounts, but don't worry about all the myths saying that your dog will die after one bite. Dark chocolate is dangerous, milk chocolate is ok (but dog treats are a safer alternative) and white chocolate is good!

Hope that helps!

God bless!

A few M&Ms killed my precious pug..the safest amount to allow is NONE..
the kids would give it to him, just a little at a time, to teach him tricks..You never know when the fatal dose is given, as the liver damage builds up..It causes rapid heart rate, damage to the liver and pancreas, will cause hypoglycemia, or diabetes..

You see many people who are excessive drinkers.. You can't see the damage it is doing to the liver, until the person is older..but the damage is accumulative, and IS there all along..
If you love your dog, there are so many other safe treats..and he can certainly live without chocolate,, but he may not live much longer WITH it...

I wouldn't feed a beloved pet poison, in any amount..just to see how much it takes to kill him..

Eating too much chocolate can kill a dog. Small doses are not too bad, but would not get into the habit of giving them any.

It is bad for all dogs but can be deadly to some! You shouldn't give your dog chocolate anymore. If your dog loves it there are lots of alternatives at pet store. Don't take the risk!

Well i am pretty sure that the amount of chocolate you are giving your dog is not dangerous. But if it is home made chocolate that is really bad. Home made chocolate is what kills dogs so don't let your dog eat it!

I have always been told never to feed your dog chocolate because it will speed up there heart rate and they could have a heart attack ...Having said that my dog got my chocolate milkshake to be on the safe side we went to a vet on line that told us what to do to get the dog to vomit it up ...I wasn't taking any chances with my dog .If your dog is ok with it then I see no reason why he can't eat it .

Chocolate contains theobromine, which increases urination and affects the central nervous system as well as heart muscle. While amounts vary by type of chocolate, it's the theobromine that is poisonous to dogs.

Knowing which chocolate is the most toxic is important, but leaves one wondering how much must be eaten to poison a dog. The list in this box should be helpful. Maybe you can clip it and post it on your refrigerator?

White chocolate: 200 ounces per pound of body weight. It takes 250 pounds of white chocolate to cause signs of poisoning in a 20-pound dog, 125 pounds for a 10-pound dog.
Milk chocolate: 1 ounce per pound of body weight. Approximately one pound of milk chocolate is poisonous to a 20-pound dog; one-half pound for a 10-pound dog. The average chocolate bar contains 2 to 3 ounces of milk chocolate. It would take 2-3 candy bars to poison a 10 pound dog. Semi-sweet chocolate has a similar toxic level.
Sweet cocoa: 0.3 ounces per pound of body weight. One-third of a pound of sweet cocoa is toxic to a 20-pound dog; 1/6 pound for a 10-pound dog.
Baking chocolate: 0.1 ounce per pound body weight. Two one-ounce squares of bakers' chocolate is toxic to a 20-pound dog; one ounce for a 10-pound dog.

I got this straight from my dog's vet, it is dark chocolate that is bad for them, as far as anyother chocolate they would have to eat at least 10 hershey bars before it would harm them.
