Health Occupations Students Association. It's a club for students who are going into medical and health fields. It usually coincides with a Health Science Technology program. The education program is a HUGE stepping stone for anyone wishing to go into medicine. The club part is your typical club, only has a more "noble" purpose (at least I think it is much better than Student Council, and Glee Club and whatever else is out there). I was in it in high school and loved it. My school's HOSA raised awareness for various health related things like raising money/getting volunteers for breast cancer, diabetes, and heart walks. We ran school blood drives. We also did a health expo. Not only did we raise awareness around our school, but it provided me with huge opportunities to further my education and career. We had tons of guest speakers, I got a chance to meet several people who went on to do my chosen profession successfully. The best part for me was competition. I know, it sounds kind of lame competing in health related stuff, but actually it was so much fun. A friend and I competed in CPR/First Aid (and in case you were wondering, we placed 1st in area, 1st in Texas, and 6th Nationally in 2004). You can compete in skills things like CPR/First Aid, EMT, physical therapy, or you can do knowledge tests like medical spelling, medical terminalogy, and medical math. There is also a HOSA Bowl and Biomedical Ethics Debates. It is really interesting and a lot of fun. Had more fun doing things for HOSA than any other club I joined, and it was much more rewarding.
