I'm fairly computer illiterate, would any of you know of a Linux distribution that could run comfortably on an old computer with 64 ram, 600 mhz processor, 8mb video card...?

I'm horrible with Linux command line, so I'd need a GUI.

Try Puppy Linux. Its light on the system and should run fine on your computer specs. The only upgrade I would recommend is RAM. You should have 128MB or more.

If you have 256MB or more, you can even install and run Ubuntu Linux satisfactorily.

I have run Puppy Linux on my P-166MMX, 64MB, 20GB, 4MB VGA. It worked well.

I don't know of any that you could set up without a little extra work. The 8MB video card is no problem as long as you don't need 3D acceleration.

The two main user environments, KDE and Gnome, are far too hoggy for 64MB RAM system. You would have to go with something smaller and simpler, like icewm for a window manager.

I don't know of any that would install automatically with this kind of setup, you might have to do some configuring yourself, starting with something minimalist like Slackware.

Check out distrowatch for information on different Linux flavors.
