I had a cat before, he died back in February of cancer just 3 months short of turning 12. I found a kitten in my garage last week, same color as my cat who died. I told myself no more cats, but this one is so cute and so sweet that he kinda grew on me. I am temporarily living with my parents who I have told of this kitten. They have seen it and agree that he is a cute one but they don't want him in the house. My mother agreed the cat can spend the day in the house but supervised and he has to go back out tonight. It's going to be 20 degrees tonight, I can't let him freeze, how can I get him into a shelter where they won't kill him? I've realized that I can't keep him but I love him already and don't want to him to be harmed or killed at the pound.

What do I do?

I've been feeding him, playing with him and he likes to ride in the car with me (which is rare for a cat)

I found today that he had been in a fight already and even if it wasn't getting cold, I couldn't bear to make him go back to the garage.

It seems that you provide the much needed love that the kitten lacks.......keep it, but also be prepared if the cat belongs to someone else.

Try looking in the phone book for humane shelters. They will usually tell you whether they can or can't take animals and whether they are no kill or not. You may also want to try calling around to pet stores that do adoptions as they usually have one or two groups they work with that may be no kill. If all else fails, call a vet- they may be able to offer a suggestion.

If you can't take the kitten until tomorrow, maybe your mother will let you keep the kitten inside tonight if she knows it will be going tomorrow.

Go online and find the phone numbers for local SPCA / Humane Society shelters. Most of these are no-kill shelters. You can also try google-searching cat rescue groups in your city or state, many of these are run by groups of foster parents who keep the cats until they have been adopted. If you have a Petsmart in your area, try asking them for information about what shelters they cooperate with for adoptions. You should be able to find a shelter close by that will not hurt the kitten.

I don't understand why your parents would allow the kitten in the house during the day and not at night. They surely must realise that it is too cold for a kitten to be out at night.

The kitten will be better off in a shelter even if he is euthanised. He will have a miserable life if left outside, contracting disease, being injured or killed by dogs or harmed by cruel people.

Can't you find someone at school or work who would be willing to give him a home?

Ask your parents if they can extend a few more days well you find a home for the cat. If he's been in a fight, he defenetly should not go back outside, even if you're sure of security (blah, blah, blah.)
I agree with the first answer, but you might want to make sure of freecycle rules before joining, they don't take kindly to people who break rules. Maybe a newspaper add or check around with some local shelters in your area.

BE SURE YOU THROUGHLY INTERVIEW THE FAMILY BEFORE GIVING THEM THE CAT.
Background checks can't hurt!

If you have to take him to a shelter, call up some and ask if they are a "no kill" shelter. Many do not kill cats or dogs.

I would recommend keeping him and making him a bed in your garage. They have heated cat pads that you can plug in and put in a box or cat bed. Get plenty of blankets and surround him in warmth. Also, you can put a lamp above his bed for extra warmth. He will get used to it in time.

Also, maybe your mother would let you keep him in your second bathroom or laundry room just until he is a little older and then put him in the garage as I mentioned above.

He sounds too cute to take to the pound and sounds like it was meant for you to have him since you lost your other cat.

There are a lot of shelters around that are "no-kill" shelters. Meaning they keep animals until they're elderly or adopted. The best thing is that the cat in your garage is still so young, so his chances of being adopted are really high. Do an internet search of no-kill shelters in your area.

I wouldn't go with freecycle. Things on there MUST be free, and giving away animals for free is inviting trouble. A lot of sick people respond to these ads to get animals....and they either torture them, or sell them to labs for research purposes. A man in Wisconsin was just convicted of animal cruelty, and he admitted to taking his children with him to meet "free to good home" animals to make the owners more comfortable in adopting the animals to him. Then he took them home and tortured them to death.

Your best bet is to see if there's a craigslist for your area (go to http://www.craigslist.com), and post an ad on there, or on Petfinder....you can ask for an adoption fee on both of those. Whether you actually charge the adoption fee or not is up to you, but at least then you'll weed out the sickos looking for "free" kittens for nasty purposes. Oh, and if you post an ad on the Petfinder classifieds, make sure you put something like, "I will not ship my animal, local people only." I got a lot of scam emails asking me to ship my cat to all sorts of weird places (and they offered me insane amounts of money, too....yeah, fishy).

Now the best thing to do is find a home for the kitten yourself since most shelters are already overpopulated, underfunded, and understaffed. But if this is impossible, look up shelters in your area. You can find a list at Petfinder, just click on "Rescue groups and shelters" at the top of the page, and then put in your location. You can also call a local vet, who should have information on no-kill shelters where you could take the kitten.

Good luck!

Check with your local dogcatcher. The one we have here will move heaven and earth to NOT put down an animal. If need be he often will take the animal home. It can't hurt to ask. Maybe your DC will know someone, a farmer? LUCK...

do you have a freecycle where you live? Its a yahoo group, search for one in your area on the yahoo groups site. Join and post the kitten on there, most likely he will be gone in a few hours, if you need more info on freecycle feel free to email me
