I went to the dentist for a filling and he numbed me up. When I went to chew shortly after my visit I felt like I bit something metal. Later in the day I did the same thing and I looked in the mirror and I was actually biting my tongue. It looks like a little white sore and it is where I bit which is on the back and on the side of my tongue. How do I get this to heal. Another thing is my grandma said something about rinsing w/ salt and water. What does that do for my teeth?

You can rinse with salt water, it will not harm, but it doesn't do much either. I would rinse with hydrogen perioxide (3%) mixed 50/50 with water or some drug stores will sell and oral antiseptic which will taste better. Do not swallow! Keep your mouth clean and brush & floss as usual. Take Motrin (Ibuprofen) which will help with the swelling & the pain. (You can take up to 800mg every 4-6 hours as needed.) Try to avoid biting it and injuring it further. Avoid acidic foods as well. Time will be the best remedy. If it doesn't improve in a few days or gets worse, get in to see the dentist again. Hope this helps and good luck!

Rinsing with Salt Water does nothing for your teeth, it cleanses the sore of bacteria. This would be a good idea so your little sore doesn't get infected. Salt and water also helps with canker sores and when you have a sore throat.

Rinsing your mouth with warm water and a teaspoon or two of salt will help with the swelling a bit. (this doens't do much for your teeth however....brush, floss, rinse and repeat for the ol' chompers)

Stay away from sugary drinks and food for several days to inhibit bacterial growth as well.

Your tongue will slowly heal if you don't chomp on it anymore.

Good luck and God Bless!

ow! the salt water is to help the healing of your tongue--yes it helps. Salt water may also help in maintaining normal ph levels in your mouth & throat. If that bite mark is real painful, apply the stuff used for teething babies--over the counter--got a clove handy? apply to sore spot.

If it is a small white sore.... they go away in about 2 days.... I have gotten a few before. Open it up... if you can and rinse with salt and water... It should have little to no effect on your teeth... its will just taste nasty.

well salt helps to heal things, a long time ago ppl loaded up wounds with salt (talk about ouch) it tastes horrible, but i doubt it would speed it up a whole lot, avoid mouthwash that will just irritate it...rinsing is ok otherwise it'll just go on its own or if it hurts u can get some oragel from pharmacy to numb it up some

Salt water is good, it wont harm your teeth

You can also use listerine to kill the germs,

they have tablets for your tongue that will disolve and protect it temporarily
