I have a Female Yorkie named Bubbles that has grown up with my 4 year old daughter and they are the best of friend's. They being the vet's office would like me to breed her, but I have heard that once little dogs have puppies they change and not soo much family dogs any more?? Does any one know or heard anything along those lines before? I do not want her temperment to change as she is the most loveing happy dog we have ever had, and Natalie's best friend!!

Yorkie puppies are in demand.. they sell quickly.

However, there is always great risk to allowing a pet to have puppies. They are more likely to develop mammary tumors and cancer..there is a risk of death during whelping...There is risk of her needing a C-section to deliver.
there is risk that she won't nurse the puppies, and you end up rearing by hand.. (VERY hard work)

You are taking a real risk, on a family pet, that could end up in heartache..especially as an untrained breeder..

I wouldn't risk the pain of loss to you and your daughter..

Newborn puppies do die, often in the first 72 hours..for no reason you can help..what a heartbreak..

Your dog's temperament would not change from having a litter of puppies. But I don't understand why the vet's office would want you to breed her. They, more than most, should know that there's a huge dog over-population problem, that dogs are much healthier if they're spayed or neutered and most importantly, that only the best examples of any breed should ever be bred.

Under no circumstance should you breed your Yorkie, unless you have proof that she harbors no genetic conditions. Knees, blindness, heart problems. If you take the dog to a specialized Yorkie breeder, and she meets the conditions of "show quality" then it wouldn't affect her to have puppies. If your Yorkie is only pet quality then save her life and have her spayed. Breast cancer, and uterine infections kill lovely family pets. The only change she would go through if she had puppies is shortly after the puppies are born she will not allow anyone to touch them. She'll bite anyone who tries.

I frankly am appalled that your vet's staff would encourage you to breed your dog willy-nilly. Is she temperamentally sound? Has she been cleared of any genetic health problems? It takes more than just being cute to be bred.
