I live in Dayton, Ohio, I have handicap plates on my car, and I park in disabled parking spaces. At the college I attend I keep getting warning slips placed on the windshield of my car that say something along the lines of "Anyone caught using handicapped license plates or placards who are not handicapped or are not travelling with a handicapped person will be subject to a $100 fine by the city." Essentially, the security guards are assuming that because I'm young and not using a cane or wheelchair that I can't possibly be handicapped. What could I do if I were to get a ticket? How would they prove I'm not disabled, or that I'm not transporting a disabled person with me?

When I attended college,I had to get a special handicapped parking permit from the college in order to park in those spots.I had to show that the car and the disability plates were registered in my name.
You cannot park in a handicapped spot just because the car you are driving has a disability plate, whether or not you are disabled. You need to get your own disability authorization.I am in Pa,and here we can get a placard to hang on the rearview mirror instead of an actual plate. You still have to have a doctors verification, but you can take that placard with you in whatever car you are riding in or driving.
I would imagine that if the car isn't registered to you, they could give you a ticket and there wouldn't be anything you could do about it since you don't have the states or a doctors authorization to park there.I knew a man who once got a ticket for parking in a disabled spot.He was in a wheelchair but had forgotten to put his placard on the mirror, even though he was disabled and had the parking permit,he still couldn't fight the ticket.
Hopefully you aren't just using this car as a reason to be able to park closer to the door,it is difficult enough for those of us who are truly disabled to find parking sometimes without someone who isn't to take up the limited spots.

In the glove compartment of the car, you should have all the paperwork from the doctor who says you are handicapped and the forms you filed to get the plate or sticker for your car: with the form approving the plate or sticker that was given to you when it was issued. Not having this may just get you into court for using the space without proper documentation. Apparently You are getting exactly the same space and staying for really extended periods of time and causing police and parking attendants to wonder. Get you paperwork together and be sure it says the handicapped sticker or plate actually allows you to park close. You can be handicapped and not authorized parking. It depends on your mobility and not your handicap.

And if a handicapped person had been right behind, where would he/she have parked? Sorry, she occupied the space, which she had no right to do. No excuses allowed, and believe me, the court has heard them all. It is a legitimate ticket and she will have to pay it. She should have stopped further away, like other able-bodied people do, and the lot of you should have walked the extra few yards. And if there were no other parking spots, which usually only happens at Christmas, she could have dropped you off on the side street, or at a loading zone, I bet there was one of those.

You're own question suggests that you acknowledge not being authorized to use a handicap parking permit. If that's true, then out of respect for people who are really disabled, you should readjust your thinking on these issues. And if it's not true, you can avoid alot of needless hassle by showing the parking control attendant supervisor a document that shows the parking permit was issued for you, and no one else.

If you get cited and go to court and it turns out that you're not authorized the permit, be prepared for significant courtroom embarrassment when it's discussed in a public setting.

If you are walking and don't have a cane, walker, or a wheel chair, then why do you need to park in the handicap area. I see many people with handicap tags and stickers that are not handicapped at all, but someone in the family is. Just because someone in the family is handicapped it doesn't give any one using the car the right to park in a handicap space. They are just taking the space of a handicapped person who needs it.

If you "are handicapped", you need to go to the Motor Vehicles office with the paperwork from your doctor and get one of the handicapped signs that hangs on your rearview mirror. I'm betting that your handicap is all in your mind and you're taking advantage.

If they haven't ticketed you yet, they are bluffing. They know they couldn't prove squat. You'd just appeal it explaining you are the disabled individual and you were driving the vehicle if you actually got a ticket. It wouldn't likely be a big deal.
