Yes. A democracy supposedly gives the power to the people. If the people ignore the power that they have, then the democracy turns into another, more dominant form of government. You'll notice that congress is pushing issues to help their party instead of issues that will help the people. Whatever happened with social security that was such a big voting issue in 2004? Why has conress received pay raises when we haven't had a minimum wage increase since 1997? They're doing what's in their best interest, not what's in the people's best interest. The democrats and republicans are too worried about opposing the opposite side's opinion to really worry about having a personal opinion on any given issue. There are more shades to every issue than white and black, and I hope that we will be able to save our government so that they start voting in shades of grey.

That is the definition of a democracy. So, yes all citizens capable must assume responsibility.

robtheman said that democracy gives power to the people. The US constitution is based on the idea that the people give power to the government, and have the right to take it back.

The second paragraph of the Declaration of Independence states:
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Right, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, DERIVING THEIR JUST POWERS FROM THE CONSENT OF THE GOVERNED. That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive to these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.

If the citizens do not assume responsibility, the government itself is no longer legitimate.

Yes. The people of a Democracy must take responsibility for their leaders' actions because the leaders "represent the people". If you vote for someone irresponsibly, and they do something stupid you are just as responsible as you would be for drunk driving.

this is the only way , responsible ,informed citizens voting,acting and taking responsibilty for those actions.our founding fathers feared the uninformed,irresponsible voting citizen but there are few safeguards

Yes of course silly. Voting is key. I wish more people realized the importance of it. One thing all politicians pay close attention to is public opinion. Voice yours!
