The bishop of Rome is apparently considering overturning the doctrine of Limbo.
What will happen to the souls, for example the unbaptised dead, supposedly there?
I guess what I am really asking is does this not show how essentially daft theology can be? Are we expected to believe that such a place sprang into existence when the pontiff decreed it was a good idea, and will dissolve out of existence when his successor changes his mind?
Are we supposed to believe that in the interim, Limbo had a real, tangible existence? And if not, what was the point? What about all the prayers for people in limbo over the centuries? What about the folk in distress at the thought of their loved ones being in limbo, or fear of ending up there themselves? What was all that about?

When will people realise that all religion is a human construct? The Catholic Church dropping the concept of limbo just serves to prove it!

Who knows how many different religions have made similar changes over the centuries; rethinks thanks to human advancement or even on the whim of heads of state? King Henry VIII invented The Church of England so he could divorce a wife, which goes against Catholicism. Why are people still following it now? Do they actually believe that God chooses those who essentially take the word of a corrupt monarch 500 years ago?

There are many good reasons for religion - for example to look after, respect and love one another. We should realise that this is what we all should do anyway as human beings, regardless of religion, colour or background, but people use religion to suppress others, as a way to condemn, kill, deprive them - and all in the name of some outdated set of rules which have changed and evolved constantly over thousands of years in order to suit those who practise them.

We get one life, get over it! Do something good while you're here 'cos you ain't getting a second chance to do it. The end.

Look in the scriptures for your answers, don't look to some man made hierarchy headed by one called the pope. The only truth we have about our faith is the bible, God's Word. The bible does not say anyone's soul goes to limbo. The bible does not say you can pray for the dead, too late, pray for those alive. What about the thief on the cross that Christ told " this day I will see you in paradise" he was not baptized! According to the scriptures we are to be baptized AFTER we have accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as our personal saviour. There are no situations in the bible where infants are baptized. We become baptized when we understand what it means and want to do it out of obedience to the Lord, it symbolizes the death to the old self when we are immersed and as we rise up it represents the new life the Lord has given us just as He rose from the dead. I say these things in kindness and am not attacking your faith but if it is not in the scriptures it is of man not of God.

The Pope did not "delete" Limbo, because it replaced into in no way an genuine doctrine of the Catholic Church. It replaced into only a properly-liked grass roots thought that tried to describe the plain conflict between the biblical actuality that being born of water and the spirit is critical for salvation, and the logical actuality that a only and loving God does not deliver harmless babies to hell. yet using fact Limbo isn't genuine doctrinal certainty, the pope has discouraged the custom. a sprint one isn't born "with sins"; yet a sprint one is born with the outcomes that the unique sin had upon human nature. All human beings are born with this non secular deficiency. it is the sacramental grace of baptism that overcomes this deficit, making us babies of God and eligible for eternal existence. You tension babies to take baths, do not you? Brush their teeth? Get sufficient sleep? Or do you purely postpone such issues till they are able to settle on for themselves? that's extra important - a actual existence which would be over in decrease than one hundred years, or non secular existence that's the skill to eternal existence? .

Ps if Roman Catholics say the Pope is infaliable, and this Pope says there is no Limbo, when other Popes have said there is, doesn't the whole idea of papal infalability break down?

pps. do not play the game limbo. my friend seriouslly wreaked his knee trying to limbo under his garage door. the top knee specialist in europe said it was the worst he'd ever seen.
i'm also told @ 1 point they drained a mug full of blood of it. i was l8r informed this was a comparative amount, they didn't actually use a mug. although Knowing the hospital in question, i wouldn/t be surprised if they had.

Good question, but the answer is probably that nothing will happen.

The Pope is abolishing the concept of Limbo, not the actual place. So if there is a Limbo then the souls will stay there but catholics won't be allowed to believe it, and if there is no Limbo then the catholics will no longer be wasting their prayers.

Aha there is question to ponder for the next millennium, it will need the wisdom of Solomon to answer it. Limbo just like Heaven and Hell is a religious word for a place to put souls that are theoretically innocent. As it is place that is neither there nor here then those souls placed within it are not there.

There is no such place... and the fact that they accept that the pope could make such things fact is further proof that the RCs are not of The Christian Faith.....

there was a place called Paradise... that is where the souls of the faithful, from the time befor Christ's crusifixion stayed untill Jesus came to take them to Heaven with him after the crusifixion... Jesus then returned to earth and spent 40 days with his followers befor returning to heaven... paradise went out of business.... now, From Christs Assention all souls sleep, when the mortal existance is over, untill that time that Christ will come to call the Church home. ( at The Rapture)

He may well be a very powerful man. God s right hand man even, but I doubt if anything he cares to sign or dictate is going to make a great deal of difference to the souls in limbo, if in deed that is where they are! When you gather the various religion/s versions of limbo, or purgatory of anything like that, who knows

If Limbo really gets overturned, that would effectively be the death knell of the religiojn - changing a doctrine like that would make the entire religion appear to be made up.....

Hey wait a sec, it IS all made up....my bad...

Limbo is not Purgatory.

Limbo was never a doctinal belief of the Church, but a simple theoretical construct, meaning a place of uncertain existence.

Purgatory is doctrine, and isn't going out of business until the scheduled date, which is Judgment Day.
